Masters of the Air - First episode

Will this series about WWII pilots be as epic as Band of Brothers? Or will Masters of the Air crash after a failed flutter flight? It won't be the fault of the producers and the budget.

Masters of the Air is the third chapter in a series of series that pays tribute to various American military units from World War II. In 2001 the very successful and beloved Band of Brothers was released. It told the true experiences of the 101 Airborne Division during their months-long journey through occupied Europe.

In 2010, producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks shifted the focus to the Marines in the South Pacific with Pacific. The combat operations in Asia are slightly less known in Europe, which was reflected in the viewing figures.

This series is also a faithful representation of true events.

The third part brings the war in Europe back into the spotlight. This time with a tribute to the pilots who gave German cities a taste of their own medicine between 1942 and 1945. It quickly became clear that those bombings were not pleasure trips.

This series is also a faithful representation of true events. We follow the 100th Bomb Group that was stationed in England at the time. They had three trump cards up their sleeves. First, they had the legendary Boeing B-17, nicknamed “the flying fortress”. This heavily armed bomber flew high and fast, thanks to its four modern, powerful engines.

The B-17 was also an incredibly reliable aircraft. Often enough, the pilots still managed to fly their badly hit and damaged aircraft 'home'. One, two or three broken engines, it all hardly seemed to bother the B-17. It is therefore not surprising that the crews were very proud of 'their coffin'.

The second asset was the then-secret Norden targeting system. This allowed the Americans to carry out precision bombing of German targets. However, the system had a disadvantage: the missions had to take place during the day. This was madness according to the British, who preferred to fly their missions in the dark.

The final asset was the incredible bravery of the young crews. If there's one thing that comes across in Master of the Air it's how dangerous their job was. Today's Europe owes an incredible amount to these airmen, and all other Allied soldiers.

The first part sets the right tone.

The first part sets the right tone. The next parts will have to determine whether Masters of the Air is a worthy tribute to these crews. I will tell you whether this was successful when all parts have been broadcast. Then there is more to be said about the performances of the actors and the script.
