In Mayor of Kingstown, Mike McLusky plays his own judge to keep various groups and gangs in check. He is seen as a kind of unofficial mayor who must maintain peace between prison life and life outside. Taylor Sheridan is an increasingly well-known name in the series landscape. He has delivered quite a few gems in a short time. He is involved in series such as Yellowstone, 1923, Tulsa King and Lioness. For me, it has now reached the point where whenever I see his name, the series is added to my list. So far he has delivered entertaining series set in beautiful landscapes. In 2021 he came up with Mayor of Kingstown. We have now reached the third season and this series is also a pleasure to watch.
Mayor of Kingstown is set in a small Michigan town where the only remaining and thriving industry are federal, state and private prisons. The story follows the McLusky family. They are the power brokers between the police, criminals, prisoners, prison guards and politicians. Racism, corruption and inequality are the order of the day. Mainly Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner, Marvel's Hawkeye) attempts to bring order and justice to a city that has neither.
In the third season, the residents of Kingstown are startled by a series of explosions. A new face of the Russian mafia also emerges, leading to a fierce drug war. Mike McLusky must put an end to this war, but then an old acquaintance from his prison past surfaces who can undermine his efforts.
You can't bury the past
Mike, as 'mayor', has his hands full to restore peace to Kingstown. He has to maintain order both inside and outside the prison and that becomes a more complex exercise as the season progresses. All kinds of groups contact Mike to solve the problem, while they are also making plans behind his back. The mutual dynamics are constantly changing and the executions follow each other in rapid succession.
In previous seasons, Mike's actions had consequences for expendable characters. This season the threat comes from all kinds of angles and considerably closer to home. Jeremy Renner is fantastic as the character Mike. Because the threat to his character and his loved ones increases, he can create more depth. The head of the Russian mafia concerns Konstantin Noskov. He is portrayed by Yorick van Wageningen, which adds a nice Dutch touch.
Mike has a good connection with criminal Deverin 'Bunny' Washington (Tobi Bamtefa, Feel Good). What I think is a shame is that, after three seasons, as a viewer you still have little background information about Mike. You know that he himself has a prison history and has therefore built up many connections in order to survive. However, you don't know how this came about. I would love to get some of his prison history in the form of flashbacks. This way you will better understand how the connections came about and why criminals have a kind of awe for the McLusky family.
The series in which Taylor Sheridan is involved mainly take place in beautiful landscapes. He has found a nice contrast with Mayor of Kingstown, because this series is set in anything but a beautiful landscape. It's a chilly affair in Kingstown. The rawness that this city radiates perfectly matches the rawness that this series carries. The series contains brutal action and is not for the faint of heart. Both inside and outside prison, personal feuds are periodically ended in gruesome ways.
Just like previous seasons, the third season is of good quality. At the time of writing, it is not yet known whether there will be a fourth season. After the season finale, a number of long-running storylines were wrapped up. New impulses are therefore needed, but there is always something to do in Kingstown. I am confident that the makers can come up with another strong season.
About the writer, Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
