Miss Scarlet and the Duke - Season 4

Miss Scarlet and the Duke has grown into a wonderful series in recent seasons.

This fourth season is no exception. This light-hearted costume drama and crime series scores well with its storylines and excellent acting talent. Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders) has completely identified with her role as private detective Eliza Scarlet. Fortunately, besides Duke William Wellington (Stuart Martin, Jamestown), there are other characters who claim the leading role. That's especially good for the continuation of the series, as Stuart Martin is leaving the series.

In addition to the two clear protagonists, other characters have come to the fore in recent seasons. For example, the role of housekeeper Ivy (Cathy Belton, Hidden Assets) has become increasingly stronger. Her motherly feelings for Eliza make for interesting interaction. Especially considering the relationship between Ivy and the somewhat distant Mr. Potts (Simon Ludders, Bridgerton) manages to help Eliza access things she normally wouldn't have access to. On the Scotland Yard side, this season the young and naive Fitzroy (Evan McCabe, Doctor Who) and the gruff Phelbs (Tim Chipping, Liar) get the chance to further expand their roles.

This fourth season is also wonderfully light-hearted entertainment.

At the start of the fourth season it appears that Eliza has not performed her management tasks very well. The once successful detective agency Nash & Sons has literally run dry. Employees did not want to work under a woman, but Eliza's stubborn and bossy behavior did not help either. Clarence (Paul Bazely, Such Brave Girls) is the only one left behind. He stayed mainly because of loyalty to his boss, Patrick Nash (Felix Scott, Our House). The latter is forced to return to London due to the poor condition of his office.

Together with Eliza, Nash will solve a case every episode this season. This is a fixed pattern in this series. Each episode has its own case. However, the private situations of the protagonists are always a common thread. The relationship between William and Eliza is central. The biggest question is whether both will find each other in love. Clearly this one is for both. However, pronouncing it is a completely different story. In addition, it is mainly Eliza's rather idiosyncratic behavior in Victorian times that drives this series. She is smart and therefore knows how to bring various cases to a successful conclusion. She is also human and in this season she makes some mistakes herself. What completes this series are the sets in which it all takes place and the beautiful costumes. British through and through. And that for an American production.

British through and through.

This fourth season is also wonderfully light-hearted entertainment. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Certainly not if it is made with this quality. It is not without reason that the series already has four seasons and that the fifth season is already being recorded. Although the departure of Stuart Martin will require something from the writers, this season has already been well addressed. The silent disappearance of Moses (Ansu Kabia, World on Fire) this season is striking. He was one of the major forces behind Eliza's success as a private detective. It proves that the makers behind this series know very well how to replace a main character without compromising the quality too much.
