Monsters - Season 1

With Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story you get something completely different than Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is not about two serial killers but about two brothers who kill their parents. The two were convicted in 1996. The series mainly tells how it came to this. An old trick is used here. The lawsuit against the two is central. From that perspective, the act and the associated circumstances are looked back at. It gives space to the story of both camps. The brothers and their defence argue that their parents' murder was the result of abuse. The prosecutor assumes that two spoiled boys went for the inheritance and the large amount of money that comes with it.

If you expect answers, it is better not to follow this series.

What's great about the television series is that it doesn't really take sides. Both stories receive equal attention. If you expect answers, it is better not to follow this series. However, the discussion has started again as to whether the two brothers are as guilty as alleged. Does their horrible act stem from the situation in which they grow up or is it mainly their desire for wealth? Every time you think you know, new evidence comes to the table. Sometimes you are convinced that it is a planned assassination attempt. An episode later you know for sure that the parents are not exactly innocent. The behaviour of both brothers does not help to believe their story constantly.

One thing is clear when it comes to the Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story series. The performances of Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) as Lyle and Cooper Koch (Power Book II: Ghost) as Erik Menendez are very strong. In doing so, they even surpass renowned stars such as Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, who play the Menendez parents. It must be said that all the acting is excellent. The question is whether the storyline about journalist Dominick Dunne (Nathan Lane) will yield much. His introduction and his opinion should contribute to the doubts but provide little new. Through his input and the images of the well-known chase and trial against O.J. At most, Simpson becomes clearer about the time in which this all takes place.

The Netflix anthology series stops at the brothers' final conviction. Lyle's behavior then makes the brothers seem more guilty than ever. The fact is, however, that new evidence emerged last year, causing doubts to arise again. Roy Rosselló, a former member of the Boyband Menudo, has stated that he was drugged and raped by the father of both brothers. In addition, a letter from Erik was found in 2018 in which he accuses his father. That letter was written months before the murder of the parents. In short, the story is not over yet. Now that the world is once again confronted with this terrible story, the question is what happens to this information.

The series generally moves a bit slowly. On the other hand, some events literally unwind in front of you very quickly. It makes it a bit confusing sometimes. The psychological consequences of the long captivity are therefore not fully revealed. Still, this series is more than worth watching. Partly thanks to this series, the shocking story has once again caused the necessary discussion. The fact that this happens says something about the quality of this series.
