Ms. Marvel - Season 1

The Marvel universe has once again been expanded with a new superhero. This time it's the turn of the teenage Ms. Marvel.

In Ms. Marvel we follow sixteen-year-old Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), an American Muslim teenager from Jersey City. An avid gamer and avid fanfiction writer, Kamala is a huge fan of superheroes and has a lot of imagination, especially when it comes to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson, Community). She feels like she doesn't fit in at school, and sometimes at home. This begins to change as she gains superpowers of her own, just like the heroes she has always looked up to. She has to learn to deal with her powers and of course this does not go without a struggle.

Over the years, Marvel has developed a kind of standard formula on how to introduce a new superhero to the public. This series also does not deviate from this and that ensures that the whole does not feel innovative. You get the feeling that you have seen this way of telling the story many times, especially if you are already familiar with other Marvel movies or series. Kamala's powers first manifest themselves when she receives a bracelet and puts it on. Then events take place where her powers can come in handy, but she doesn't always have them completely under control. Of course, she will do all kinds of exercises to better control her powers. She undergoes all this with one of her best friends; Bruno (Matt Lintz, The Walking Dead).

Je krijgt niet iets te zien wat je nooit eerder hebt gezien en haar krachten worden niet ten volle benut.

Kamala has to fight against the Clandestines, a group of people who come from another dimension and need Kamala's powers to return to their own Noor dimension. In addition, she has to deal with a group of Damage Control agents, a government unit that tracks down individuals who have superpowers and wants to have them locked up. During these action scenes it never really gets exciting in my opinion. You don't get to see anything you've never seen before and her powers aren't used to their full potential. You could do devastating things with her powers, but it remains pretty basic. This may suit the youthfulness, but a more robust approach would have had more impact.

Today, Marvel is very much in the business of being more and more inclusive and pleasing the woke movement. While I have nothing against seeing actors of different nationalities shine on screen, I still believe that what matters is the quality of the actors involved. If you deliver quality then you are entitled to the role no matter who or what you are, but as far as I'm concerned it doesn't have to be an end in itself to be inclusive per se. At Ms. Marvel, you sometimes feel like you're watching a series that takes you on a journey through Pakistani culture, instead of watching the evolution from a teenage girl to a superhero. I think it's okay to present Pakistani influences in a subtle way, but now it's a bit too over the top in my opinion. Iman Vellani portrays Kamala, and eventually Ms. Marvel, very well. She knows how to portray the character in a touching way and her timing for humor is spot on. The other cast members impress me a little less and that is what I mean by delivering quality in a series. Kamala's relatives seem a bit awkward to me and the bad guys don't exactly scare you either.

Maybe I should come to the conclusion that I'm getting a little too old for watching a teenage superhero. Nevertheless, I feel that there was more to get out of it. Ms. Marvel is pretty fun to watch, but it doesn't leave a crushing impression. If you want to keep up with the Marvel universe, you are almost forced to watch this series. A little tip is to keep watching after the end of the last episode. There is an after-credits scene that may be of interest to the Marvel fans among us. There is currently no word on a possible second season for Ms. Marvel and that is not necessary in my opinion. It has already been announced that she will return in the film The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel.
