National Treasure: Edge of History - Season 1

For many people it is a real quest to find the right series. In some cases, a series contains a true search for itself. Join a real treasure hunt in National Treasure: Edge of History.

When I heard that a National Treasure series was in development, I became very excited. The series is considered a sequel to the National Treasure film series. I used to find these films extremely entertaining to watch because of the breathtaking adventures. The concept of the film series offers inexhaustible possibilities to set up a very entertaining story. In addition, the format is ideal for bringing it to the small screen. Enough ingredients to make it a successful series. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it doesn't quite work out that way.

The series revolves around the life of Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera, Total Eclipse). Her life is turned upside down when a mysterious stranger gives her a clue about an ancient treasure linked to her father, who died when she was a baby. Jess has a talent for puzzles. That talent is put to the test as she and her friends follow a number of clues hidden in American artifacts and monuments. Jess gets deeper and deeper into a treasure hunt. In it, she not only competes against a wealthy and ruthless rival, Billie Pearce (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Wednesday), but is also forced to question the reliability of loved ones. Will Jess find history's greatest lost treasure and finally uncover the truth about her family's history?

Despite balancing on the viewer's sense of credibility, it is great fun to follow the quest.

As indicated, the source material has enough possibilities for people to enjoy. In my opinion, this is only partly used. I think the positive aspect is the hunt for the lost treasure. As a viewer you come into contact with historical stories, puzzles, riddles and hidden locations. However, solving these puzzles and riddles has mixed results. Some solutions are very nice and inventive, but some are also very far-fetched. Jess has a natural talent for solving puzzles. In addition, at her age she already has an infinite dose of historical knowledge. These skills will come in handy during her search for the treasure. Despite balancing on the viewer's sense of credibility, it is great fun to follow the quest.

What I have more trouble with is the search for an own identity of this series. You get the feeling that the makers don't quite know which way to go. On the one hand, they want a connection with the former film series in order to bind the fans. At the same time, the series is completely separate from the former characters and in this way, they try to win over a new generation of fans. If you wanted a connection to the film series, it would have been more fun to have at least a relative of the main character of the films, played by Nicolas Cage, play the lead role in this series. The only connection there is now is limited to some objects in a clue room that will be familiar to fans of the film series. In addition, you see two cameos of characters from the film series that add very little to this series.

In addition, the wealth of new characters are not all high flyers. Certainly not in acting. The main character Jess is played quite nicely by Lisette Alexis. There is real potential in her acting skills. On the other hand, you can tell from her friends that they are inexperienced actors. You can't blame them, because for most it's their first real bigger role. You expect a bit more from the seasoned Catherine Zeta-Jones. She doesn't quite come off as a villain. Her character never really feels menacing.

All in all, it is quite an entertaining series, but it suffers from a number of flaws. Recently you have been able to read on MySeries that there will not be a second season. I think that's a shame, because if the makers approach a number of aspects differently, there is potential in this series. For people who are hesitant to watch the series after it has been canceled, I can at least say that the story will be neatly concluded.
