NCIS: Hawaii - Season 1

Yet another NCIS spin-off? Of course! When CBS sees dollar signs, you can bet the spin-offs follow. And this is a rather cute one, I would say. It is not great, but definitely not bad either. In the end, it is another a dime a dozen American crime show.

We travel to the lovely island of Hawai’i in this most recent spin-off, where they could conveniently reuse the sets from Hawaii 5-0, to find a new NCIS team led by Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey, Dads). The rest of the team consists of Kai Holman (Alex Tarrant, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Jesse boone (Noah Mills, The Enemy Within), Lucy Tara (Yasmine Al-Bustami, The Chosen), and Ernie Malik (Jason Antoon, Claws).

Furthermore, we regularly see Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson, Blindspot), a DIA officer who often works together with the team and becomes the love interest of Lucy Tara. This team does what a team does in every NCIS show/crime series: they solve a crime every week and generally deal with some bigger problems throughout the season.

Now we got that out of the way, we can delve a bit deeper into the quality of the show. The setting of Hawai’i is great. That is not surprising given that CBS has quite some experience with shooting shows on the island; the stock videos of Hawai’i are lovely. If I could afford it, I would be on the next plane.

The level of action is somewhat in between the original and NCIS: Los Angeles; fewer explosions and car chases and the like, but they are certainly not as ‘rare’ as in NCIS. The storylines are also generally nice, with some stronger and some weaker episodes. Some plot twists are actually decent and the writers were willing to sacrifice some minor characters for plot development, which is a good sign. The quality also grows as the season progresses. The actors grow in their roles and get more used to it.

For a crime series, this one is quite decent

Of course, it also suffers from of the same problems that the other NCIS shows do. At times, the show is just military propaganda. You also most definitely need some suspension of disbelief to keep watching. Overall, however, the show is fun and the characters are nice; they grew on me.

In the end, for a crime series, this one is quite decent. Nonetheless, if you don’t like the case-of-the-week format of these types of series, skip this one. It is not good enough to make you like the genre by a long shot.
