Fewer series in your list? We’re thinking about it…

This one falls squarely into the category of: “not fun to announce, but maybe necessary.” We’re considering placing a limit of 10 to 15 series in the “What to watch” list for free accounts. Yup. Let that sink in for a moment.
Why? Well, pull up a chair…

AI, adblockers, and vanishing ads

Back in the day, it was simple: people would search “when does season 4 of X start?” and land on our site via Google. Now, AI does that job, often right there in the search results and that means less traffic for us.

And the visitors we do get? They love TV… and adblockers.

Don’t get us wrong, we totally get it. Nobody enjoys flashy banners selling shady crypto coins. But when nearly everyone blocks ads and we’re getting fewer visitors, well… keeping things running becomes a real challenge.

So what are we thinking?

We want to keep MySeries clean, fast, and alive, without stuffing it full of clickbait or endless walls of sponsored content.

That’s why we’re considering limiting free accounts to 10 to 15 series in their “What to watch” list.

If you’re a Plus or Premium user, nothing changes. You can continue adding as many series as you like and by doing so, you’re directly helping to keep the platform alive. For that, we’re incredibly grateful.

Are people going to like this?

Nope. We get that too.
Limits suck. Except when it comes to the number of cliffhangers per episode.

That’s exactly why we’re sharing this idea with you first.
What do you think? Comment below, post in the forum, or send us your feedback. Really, we’re listening.

And if we do go through with it?

We’ll do it the right way:
- You’ll get a clear warning as you approach the limit.
- You won’t lose any data — everything you’ve already added will still be visible.
- We’ll likely offer a free trial of Plus or Premium, so you can test if it’s right for you.

We’re not here to lock anyone out. But we do want to build something sustainable and for that, we need your support.

Thanks for being here. For your reviews, your lists, your votes, and your grumbling about cliffhangers.
Without you, MySeries is just… nothing.

This is a strange concept, isn't it? But we'll see when a test is done, right? Just ask everyone for a small contribution of 1 euro or so per month, because imposing restrictions on things that don't contribute anything is also strange, right?

As mentioned in the message, we are considering limiting the "Still to Watch" list to a maximum of 10 to 15 series. If you want to watch all the series, you'll need a subscription. Exactly how this will look and work is not yet known.

In addition, we ask that you respond in a polite and respectful manner, as is appropriate.

I've been a premium member for so long that I don't even remember what this site looks like with ads. For less than €25 a year, you're ad-free and get all sorts of extra statistics.

Just to note that the current annual price for Premium is €29.99. If I knew how to post a screenshot of this on this forum, I could prove I'm seeing this price. Do you have an Android phone myself? Is there a price difference between Belgium and the Netherlands? I usually access Mijnserie.nl through the app.

I see the following in terms of prices:

Premium:
6 months € 14.95
12 months €24.95
24 months €44.95

I also see a price of
3 months €8.95, but I can't seem to find a way to select this option when signing up for a subscription.

The prices in Futsudo's post are correct and I have no idea where the €29.99 came from.

https://www.mijnserie.nl/help/51-premium-account/69-wat-kost-een-premium-account/

Addition: I have Android myself and therefore no experience with Apple, but in that app store I see an amount of €24.99.
That's a 4 cent difference.

I agree with Arjenski. Just do it. But of course, as a premium member, it's easy for me to say that ;-)

Makes sense. For the 25 euros a year without ads, I'm willing to pay it, plus the extras.

I just googled: TV series information. You do indeed see AI first, with "MySeries" listed first. It's only a short scroll if you don't expand the AI. Not that I disagree with it, I have a premium account too, but you free account holders will probably be disappointed. Trakt recently implemented something similar. I have a free account and accept the ads (don't want premium, one of yours is enough), and I was really disappointed. Because of these new changes, I'm using Trakt a lot less.

I don't know about you, but I've never had more than 10 shows on my to-watch list. Have you? I only have 5 right now.

This would be a bit of a challenge for me. I've been a "member" for 14 years with a free account. It works perfectly for me, with around 838 days on the clock 🙃🫣, and currently 19 series in the watch list, which fluctuates wildly. I really like keeping track. Of course, I've often considered switching to premium, even if it's just to support it, but oh well, I never did in the end 🤷‍♀️.

How will it be handled if, at the time this "measure" takes effect, there are more than 15 series in the "to watch list"? How will you then decide which series will be (automatically) removed, leaving only 15 on the list? Or will everyone be able to whittle down their list to just 15?

I haven't really thought about this yet, but if I decide to implement it, I'll share an article about it first. For example, you could see the first 15 series and then a message saying the rest is hidden. If you want to see more, you'll need a subscription.

Been a free member for a long time. I'd have to delete some shows from my list or pay. I'd find it annoying, but I also understand. Time will tell which one I'll end up with, haha.

I've had premium since I can remember, so nothing will change for me, and if we end up paying more for it, I wouldn't care. You won't find the most perfect website for mapping all the series anywhere.

I think it will drive a lot of free members to other apps/sites, which will ultimately result in even fewer visitors.
Just typed into Google: 'information TV series' and MySeries even appeared above the AI overview.
But I'm here for the series news, and apparently nothing is changing there, so it won't make any difference to me. However, as already mentioned, I think this won't so much get more people subscribing, but will actually attract fewer people overall. That won't really appeal to advertisers either (since paid members don't see ads anyway).

If we were to build this, it would indeed make little difference to you. And yes, there's a chance some people will switch; that's why I posted this news item first. Nothing has been finalized yet.

As far as I know, there are no other Dutch-language sites where you can keep track of this, so I don't expect people to be looking for alternatives anytime soon.
I also think 15 is still quite a high number. I've never had 15 shows in my "to watch" list, so even if I had a free account, it wouldn't bother me.

Perhaps try charging a monthly fee for the Premium account instead of annually, for example, at €3 per month, so you pay €36 per year. (A win for you, and convenient payment for members.) If you pay all at once, you can still have the current annual fee deducted. Just a suggestion, of course.

If you're going to use monthly direct debits, first carefully investigate the associated bank fees. They might be disproportionately high.

There are certainly solutions for this, and the costs are reasonable. However, development is time-consuming. So, you need to factor both development costs and payments into your calculations.

I'm especially curious whether Movieman would actually take out an account in that case, since an annual subscription is always more cost-effective.

I'm willing to pay monthly for a Premium account if the price is reasonable. At Gaia, I pay a monthly fee via standing order, so there are no additional charges.

I find this option quite interesting. A one-time payment of €24.95 is more painful than, say, €2.50/€30 once a month.

I'm wondering: what exactly is the link between fewer visitors and reducing the "Still to See" list to 10 to 15 series? Or is this not about visitors, but about people who have created accounts and only use the site to keep track of their series? After all, visitors are separate from the "Still to See" list.

Lange
Yesterday, 15:43
Good question!
Fewer visitors automatically means fewer banners are displayed. We're also seeing a continued increase in the number of visitors using an ad blocker.

The "Still to See" list is the most frequently used feature of the website/app. If we were to make it less freely accessible, there are roughly three consequences:
- Some users are willing to pay for full access.
- Some have less than 10 to 15 series and don't notice any difference.
- Some drop out.

If those people who opt out use an adblocker, it doesn't generate any revenue, while the servers that run MijnSerie and the news writers certainly do incur costs. That's why we're looking for ways to generate more revenue, and this is one possible solution.

My to-be-watched list will never exceed 15 series, but I hope the watch list will stay the same. I'll put series I want to watch but haven't started yet on that list.

You also have an option in the app called "MySeries Plus," which I believe is only for the app, but it's cheaper than the €24.95 for a year on the website. I think MySeries Plus is around €8 or €9 for a year.
