Sequel to Who's the Boss? and Bosch spin-off about J. Edgar are canceled at Amazon

Amazon MGM Studios will not be moving forward with the untitled J. Edgar project in the Bosch universe.
Meanwhile, Amazon Freevee will not be moving forward with the sequel to Who's the Boss? starring Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano, which was in the works at the streamer.

Who's the Boss?

The untitled J. Edgar project was one of two Bosch spin-offs announced in February 2023 as being in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The other, which focuses on detective Renée Ballard, was shot into series earlier this year with Maggie Q in the lead role.

Larry Andries (Blue Bloods) wrote the script for the J. Edgar spin-off, which he co-produced with Michael Connelly, author of the Harry Bosch book series. Andries was charged with six counts of sexual assault in Los Angeles in March.

The J. Edgar offshoot would follow Harry Bosch's (Titus Welliver) former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, who is assigned to an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami. In this glamorous city, he is forced to balance his new life with the city's gritty underbelly, all while being haunted by his mysterious past.

Jamie Hector, who starred in Bosch as Edgar opposite Welliver (pictured), is said to reprise his role in the potential spin-off. The production team on behalf of Fabel Entertainment consists of executive producers Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate and co-executive producer Jasmine Russ.

Amazon's Bosch universe, which kicked off in 2014 with the long-running main series, currently consists of Bosch: Legacy, starring Welliver, and Renée Ballard's untitled drama. Bosch: Legacy concludes with the upcoming third season, which introduces Q's Ballard.

The sequel to Who's The Boss?, written/produced by One Day at a Time (2017) co-creator/executive producer/co-showrunner Mike Royce and co-executive producer Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz, is set to debut at Freevee in 2022.

It comes from Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the original series and has been working on the sequel since 2020. While the project has not been brought to other platforms at this time, it remains alive at the studio, sources said.

Set 30 years after the events of the original series, the sequel focuses on former Major League Baseball player/retired householder Tony Micelli (Danza) and his relationship with his daughter Samantha (Milano). She is now a single mother and lives in the parental home.
