"You have to have him. He makes it work," Filoni said of Tennant.
Tennant (pictured), best known as Doctor Who, will play the droid character Huyang in the series. He previously voiced the character in Filoni's animated version of the series and won a Daytime Emmy for his work on the series. Tennant is also known for his roles in Marvel's Jessica Jones, Broadchurch and Good Omens.
Later on during the panel, Filoni and Favreau shared new footage from the series that also revealed Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards (2013)) is returning to the Star Wars universe to play Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka.
Mikkelsen (pictured) voiced Thrawn in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Mikkelsen later appeared on stage with the cast to share his role. He also starred in series such as Forbrydelsen/The Killing, Borgen, Sherlock, The Witcher and the Italian series Diavoli/Devils.
"It's great," he said, when asked what it feels like to return to Star Wars.
The line-up of directors who will work on the series was revealed this morning in London. Filoni will co-create episodes with Steph Green (The Book of Boba Fett), Peter Ramsey (The Mandalorian), Jennifer Getzinger (Mad Men), Geeta Patel (House of the Dragon) and Rick Famuyiwa (The Mandalorian).
Disney revealed the first trailer for Ahsoka last Friday during the Lucasfilm Studios Showcase at Star Wars Celebration. The same teaser was shown on Saturday with a few additional scenes added. The studio also released a series of updates, including a wide release date for the series: August 2023.
Ahsoka is Disney+'s spin-off series of the hit series The Mandalorian. Rosario Dawson stars as the titular Ahsoka Tano. Dawson attended Star Wars Celebration along with other cast members, including Jude Law, who leads another spin-off, Skeleton Crew.
Written by Star Wars Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni and produced by Filoni and Jon Favreau, Ahsoka will continue the story of Ahsoka from The Mandalorian. She is of the alien species Togruta, known for their large montrals and main tails, and colorful pigments. The character of Ahsoka was co-created by George Lucas and Filoni.
Plot details for Ahsoka have been kept under wraps. Nothing was said about Hayden Christensen's return as Anakin Skywalker in the series.
The cast also includes Ray Stevenson (Rome), Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Society) as Sabine Wren from the animated series Star Wars Rebels, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo). Winstead will play Hera, which was also revealed on stage at the Celebration.
