Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale and Donal Logue, among others, have been cast in Elgin James' Prison Break pilot. Hulu and 20th Television’s Prison Break pilot has added several actors to the cast, including Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor and Sylvester Powell. Production begins next week in West Virginia.
Margo Martindale
The project reunites McKinnon with Elgin James, who worked together on Mayans MC (2018), with the latter co-creating the series and the former starring. McKinnon played the villainous Lincoln Potter in the FX series Sons of Anarchy and its spinoff, Mayans MC (2018). Logue also had a role in Sons of Anarchy.
McKinnon plays Joe Dahl, a private investigator investigating a 10-year-old murder. Martindale plays Jessica Strand, the warden of one of the deadliest prisons in America. Logue stars as Holt Keane, a father grieving the loss of his family. Taylor plays Carole Mullen, a mother determined to find the truth. Powell is Maze, an inmate and the younger brother of Red (Myles Bullock).
As previously reported, James’ version will be standalone and set in the same universe as Paul Scheuring’s original Fox series of the same name. This new project is not expected to involve the characters central to the original Prison Break project, Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell).
The spinoff project was first revealed to be in development in late 2023 and was picked up for a pilot in December.
Donal Logue
The reboot’s pilot stars Emily Browning, Lukas Gage, Drake Rodger, Clayton Cardenas, JR Bourne, Myles Bullock, Georgie Flores, and Priscilla Delgado.
The original Prison Break, which began in 2005, followed Michael Scofield (Miller), a young man determined to prove the innocence of his convicted brother Lincoln Burrows (Purcell) and save him from death row by devising an elaborate plan to escape from prison. The series aired for four seasons on Fox, followed by a television movie titled The Final Break, which aired in 2009, 12 days after the season finale.
A 2015 sequel starring Miller and Purcell, also on Fox, served as the fifth season. Prison Break was the No. 1 most-streamed series in the U.S. in August 2024, according to Nielsen.
In addition to Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC (2018), McKinnon has appeared in HBO's Deadwood and Hulu's Dopesick, among others.
Martindale won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Critics' Choice Television Award for her recurring role as Mags Bennett on FX's Justified. She was nominated for an Emmy Award four times for her recurring role as Claudia on The Americans (also on FX), winning in 2015 and 2016.
Logue played Detective Harvey Bullock on Fox's DC Comics series Gotham. He is also known for playing nurse Chuck Martin on NBC's ER, Lee Toric on Sons of Anarchy, Horik of Denmark on History Channel's Vikings, and the recurring role of Lt. (later Captain) Declan Murphy on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Taylor was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Anne Blaine on the ABC anthology series American Crime. She received two additional Emmy nominations for her guest role on Fox’s The X Files and for her recurring role as Lisa Kimmel on HBO’s Six Feet Under.
Powell played Jessie Raymond on The CW’s All American: Homecoming, a role he previously guest-starred on All American (2018). He has also guest-starred on CBS’s Criminal Minds, among others.
