Scott Speedman has officially been cast in the lead role of RJ Decker in ABC's new drama series pilot based on Carl Hiaasen's 1987 novel Double Whammy. RJ Decker centers on a former press photographer and ex-convict (played by Scott Speedman) who starts a new life as a private investigator in the colorful but crime-ridden South Florida of Carl Hiaasen's world.

Decker finds himself embroiled in cases ranging from the strange to the downright bizarre, and is aided by his ex (a journalist), her wife (a police inspector), and a mysterious woman from his past — who will either prove to be his greatest ally or send him straight back to prison. RJ Decker is described as a charming man with a short fuse and a restless soul.
The series comes from Elementary creator Rob Doherty, who wrote the script, and is directed by Paul McGuigan. Speedman will play the title role in the 20th Television production.
The casting strengthens Speedman's existing ties with ABC and 20th TV, as he has previously starred as Nick Marsh on Grey's Anatomy , where he returned in a recurring role after a regular appearance in season 18. According to sources, his involvement with RJ Decker should not interfere with his role on Grey's Anatomy; The plan is that he can combine both projects if the pilot is developed into a full series.
Speedman is expected to return to Grey’s Anatomy for the upcoming 22nd season after RJ Decker wrapped filming. After season 21 wrapped in May, executive producer/showrunner Meg Marinis was asked if Speedman would return. She said, “The contracts are not finalized yet, but we love Scott, and his character Nick is still with Meredith.” She also noted his presence at Ellen Pompeo’s star ceremony, which was well-received by fans.
RJ Decker is the only pilot ABC has ordered in 2025 so far, with a potential mid-season 2026 airdate. The series seems like a good fit for the network’s other lighthearted crime series with strong leads, such as High Potential, The Rookie and Will Trent.
Scott Speedman, known for Felicity, most recently starred in the Peacock horror series Teacup. He previously starred in TNT's Animal Kingdom (2016) and had a major role in season three of Netflix's You. In the film world, he is best known for his role in the Underworld franchise.
