Series of the year 2020 - Best superhero series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2020 and discusses the superhero category. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 4th and Monday, February 1st.
2020. What a special year it was. Half of all the expected series didn't premiere, we've seen loads of adapted schedules and quite a few series abruptly stopped or would be continued at a later point. Despite all of that, there were plenty of great superhero series that aired this year. And let's be honest, wouldn't it be great if we had some superheroes around?

Down below, you'll find the top ten nominated series for this category in alphabetical order. Compared to last year, this list only features two new series but it could go either way. Nonetheless, in my humble opinion, there are only two series that should be at the top. I'll leave it up to you to decide for yourself!:

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It has often been said that this series should've stopped at Season five. And I agreed with that statement, that is, until the seventh season. This smart, cheerful and fun season is something I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on. The Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters have grown into true cult heroes within this genre. Is this already enough for your vote?

Arrow

The nomination of this series may cause a bit of an uproar. One group may think it's insane that Arrow 'has been nominated once again' but the other group may find it justified. You can say about Arrow whatever you want, but it is the foundation upon which the Arrowverse is built. Arrow's final season was received positively, so for one last time, Arrow has found its way into this list!

Batwoman

After two years of 'crossovers' in The CW's Arrowverse, Batwoman finally acquired her own series in 2019. And this one was immediately unique, as this was the first time the lead character was a lesbian woman. Batman's niece swings through Gotham and has conquered many hearts.

The Boys

In 2019, this rock solid superhero series exceeded all expectations. The Prime Original didn't just crush a lot of characters but also loads of records. And it didn't end there. The second season of The Boys is seen by most fans as a true bloody work of art.

Doom Patrol

Psychedelic, hysterical, strange and peculiar. There's no better way to describe Doom Patrol. While watching, you almost feel as if you're high. And this doesn't end in the second season. The amount of oddities only increases. And honestly, nobody could say that this is a bad thing... right?

The Flash (2014)

Every year, Barry Allen manages to run straight into this category. Even though the general consensus is that the quality of The Flash (2014) seems to diminish, most people thought it deserved a spot in the top ten.

Helstrom

Honestly, this is the only series in this list of which I haven't seen a single episode. This horror series has a growing fanbase and that often means one thing: there has to be quality. (or a handsome actor but in that case my previous point doesn't seem true anymore......)

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

If you want to watch pure 'fun' in a superhero series, DC's Legends of Tomorrow is your thing. I know of very few series that show as much joy as this one. The writers do sometimes know that all of it doesn't make any sense, but that only makes it more ingenious. A special series that has earned its spot.

DC's Stargirl

This series started off as a bit of a wallflower. Quite pretty, but very few people realised it existed. When it turned out that DC's Stargirl had a rather unique style that could be appreciated by many, it became one of the surprises of this year!

The Umbrella Academy

Well, let's be honest. I don't have to say a whole lot about this Netflix Original. The acting, the cinematography, its humour and the visuals are all of great quality. This could be the potential winner of this category. But ah, this may just be my opinion.

What a list we have this year! Do you want quality? Or are you more into the nostalgic feeling? No matter what your vote is, feel free to explain it in the comments. It's something I'm quite curious about. And finally, a prediction for 2021. This list will probably look quite marvelous. ;)

These were all ten nominees, which has been based on information provided by the members, the writers and yours truly. Can't find your own favourite? You can always use a wildcard. Good luck voting.
