Spotlight on: Anya Taylor-Joy

Lights off, spotlight on! Time to see in which series this actress portrayed a character.

She is 24 years and was part of one of the most popular Netflix series. She was also crowned the actress of the year in our 2020 Series of the Year elections. The American actress with British, Argentinian, Spanish and English roots is becoming a pretty big deal in Hollywood.

When actors and actresses begin, there's always the possibility that you've missed that one role. Did you know that Taylor-Joy's first role was actually in the movie Vampire Academy? Admittedly, it was only a background role. Nonetheless, it served as the first step in her already impressive career.

At the time it was 2014, and Taylor-Joy seems to get into whatever she can get into. In that very same year, she has a one-time role in the series Endeavour. The series - which takes place in the 60s - focuses on the younger years of police officer Endeavour Morse in Oxford. It currently already has eight seasons.

Maybe we can start talking about a breakthrough when Taylor-Joy acquired a guest role in the series Atlantis. In six episodes, she portrays Cassandra, who was a woman who trained her entire life to become an oracle.

That breakthrough continued with her role in the horror movies The Witch and Split. The actress had smaller roles in the horror movie Morgan, biography Barry, crime-comedy Thoroughbreds and horror movie Marrowbone.

At the time, Taylor-Joy seemed to be acquiring quite a resume on the big screen. She applied for a role in the miniseries The Miniaturist. This three-part British miniseries takes place in a mansion in Amsterdam. Even though it focuses on one of the most prosperous neighbours in the city, there are all kinds of forbidden passions and secrets that seem to hide behind the beauty and wonder. Taylor-Joy has a lead role, that of Nella Brandt. After she marries her husband Johannes, she moves in with him.

Next to some smaller movie roles, Taylor-Joy is also part of two popular series. In the first one, she was a voice actress. She served as the voice of Brea in the series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Next to that, she had several guest episodes as Gina Gray in Peaky Blinders.

The year after that, she may have had her biggest success so far. Once again a Netflix series, The Queen's Gambit. The series manages to make chess hip once again, and that is definitely in part due to Taylor-Joy's portrayal of Beth Harmon. The Queen's Gambit was one of the biggest Netflix hits of 2020.

The actress had quite some plans after that, her career boosted by the chess series. She has returned to the horror genre on the big screen with Last Night in Soho. She will also be part of The Northman alongside Alexander SkarsgÄrd. Next to that, she will portray Furiosa in the origin story of the titular character from the Mad Max universe. She will also be part of the thriller Laughter in the Dark, of which there aren't that many details as of now.

All of them movies, one of which is currently unnamed. It is a project from David O. Russel. The film will also feature Margot Robbie and Christian Bale. The big screen seems to be the main focus of Taylor-Joy, but let's hope that we'll see more of her on the small screen as well.
