Series of the Year 2022 - Best Animated Series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2022 and discusses the animated category. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday 2 January and Sunday 5 February.
It's that time again! The year has flown by and that means the Series of the Year elections have begun again. It's up to me to present the animation category. Because what a good year it was for animation. Especially when I look at the reviews written about some of the nominees.

This year we were able to stream many spectacular animated series that were released on various platforms. Some series managed to make the list of nominees again this year, but newcomers also managed to secure their spots. With the help of readers and other MySeries writers, the nominees were chosen. Let's get started!

Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for best series from 2022;

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan was missing from last year's list of nominees, but this year the hugely popular anime returns. With the second part of the final season, the story kicked into an even higher gear. Unanswered questions are answered and fans see Eren Yeager literally take on the world. The story is beautifully portrayed by MAPPA studios and with the fitting opening of SiM, Attack on Titan earns a place in the top 10.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has also claimed its place on the list as a phenomenal addition to its source material. The anime, based on the Cyberpunk 2077 game, is flashy, hyper-violent, and generally perfect for the Cyberpunk universe. With an original story, part of this larger universe, a great soundtrack, and a beautiful animation style, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners had to know how to easily earn a spot on our list of nominees.

The Boys Presents: Diabolical

The Boys Presents: Diabolical
Imagine a combination between The Boys and Invincible, which is what The Boys Presents: Diabolical is. Not surprising, because the twisted minds behind both these series have made this beautiful horror of an animation. The different styles of animation work quite well and the huge cast full of star actors makes for a very lively performance of the multiple characters. We just can't let this series sit on the sidelines. It deserves a spot on the list of nominees. If only because of his madness.

The Dragon Prince

The Dragon Prince
The Dragon Prince is back on the list of nominees! The last time, if I remember correctly, was when the series had just started its second season in 2019. Now, well into their fourth season, the series is back on the menu. The series continues to be all about world-building and the introduction of new cultures and characters to advance the story. And with a fifth season on the way, The Dragon Prince earns its spot on the list of nominees.

I Am Groot

I Am Groot
I Am Groot. Both the name of the series and the famous quote from Groot, the tree character from Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot's overwhelming cuteness has even landed him a comedy and family-oriented TV show on Disney+. The five episodes in which we can follow Baby Groot on his adventures are funny and offer a nice escape from the threats in the MCU. This standalone animation is a delight from start to finish and deserves its spot on the list of nominees.

Love, Death & Robots

Love, Death & Robots
Another series that is back on our list of nominees is Love, Death & Robots. 2022 saw the release of its third season with even more wacky adventures, unique animation styles, and beautiful episodes. We also got to see our favorite trio in Three Robots: Exit Strategies this season, and Season 3 saw one of the best episodes yet. Reason enough to add this series to the list of nominees.

Pokémon: Ultimate Journeys

Pokémon
After 25 years, Ash Ketchum can proclaim himself top Pokémon trainer after becoming world champion in the latest Pokémon anime. For that reason alone, we can add Pokémon to our list of nominees. But besides this huge achievement, there are of course other reasons to include Pokémon in our list. Consider the interesting backstories we got about many of the characters, including Pikachu as an adorable Pichu. But also the interesting raid battles we saw during this new generation. Although the series remained relatively the same for about 25 years, some small changes here and there allowed this anime to earn a spot on this list.

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty
The sixth season of Rick and Morty kept showing us the strange adventures Rick and Morty have. From 'doing a Die Hard' to a kind of Final Destination, the pop culture references were once again strongly represented. This season also delved a little deeper into Rick's past, but don't let that fool you. We never know what is right. Anyway, Rick and Morty landed a place on our list just by being itself. A story between a grumpy old wise man and his silly teenage grandson.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks
Another series returning to our list of nominees is Star Trek: Lower Decks. The Star Trek animation focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships. After three seasons, this series still manages to capture the feeling that you are watching an old, cool Star Trek series. All while remaining a comedy at its core. This series started with a good first season and developed into an amazingly funny and wacky animation. So Lower Decks definitely deserves a spot on this list.

Tales of the Jedi

Tales of the Jedi
Last year we had Star Wars: Bad Batch, this year we have Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. Where Bad Batch focused on the troopers, Tales of the Jedi (you guessed it) relies on the Jedi in the prequel era. And it does that in a beautiful way. The series perfectly weaves the story of the prequel trilogy into a series that shows the slow decline of the republic. It is a dark, deep, and powerful series that can be seen as the missing link in the other Star Wars series and films.

These were all ten nominees nominated by the readers, the writers, and myself. If you still want to choose a different series, you can always use your wildcard. Good luck voting!
