Series of the Year 2023 - Best Comedy/Dramedy Series

Series of the Year 2023 - Best Comedy/Dramedy Series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2023 and focuses on the best comedy/dramedy series of the year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 2, and Sunday 4 February.
Crying with laughter for a year. Rolling on the floor for a year. Lying on the couch for a year. Or a year of not understanding one joke after another with an eyebrow raised. Comedies and dramedy series are perhaps the most difficult to make. After all, how difficult is it to make something that everyone likes? Let alone funny!

Yet television companies and streaming services try again every year. Massively. One comedy after another is thrown at us. An endless stream of lame jokes, one-liners and 'pun intended' jokes. Of course, a number of favorites have emerged again this year. Is yours not included? Bad luck! Just kidding of course, you can always use a willcard to give your best comedy/dramedy of the year a vote!

Below are the top ten nominees for best comedy/dramedy series from 2023 in alphabetical order.

All Creatures Great and Small (2020)

All Creatures Great and Small (2020)
The 1930s in the United Kingdom. And there's a young vet who experiences all kinds of things. Mostly, the events in Channel 5's All Creatures Great and Small (2020) are light-hearted and humorous. Sometimes there is a more serious edge to it. After four seasons, James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) is immensely popular, not only in the Yorkshire Dales, but also with an increasingly large audience.

Barry

Barry
Barry is a familiar face on this list. The series about an ex-marine who is now a hitman who is extremely dissatisfied with his own life was also nominated in 2022. With the last season about the man who is now in prison, the series also ended this year. Not only that, but his girlfriend and the man he was trying to protect also take a liking to him at that moment. You have already seen how Barry fares in these final episodes. If not, go do that!

The Bear

The Bear
How do you ensure you successfully run a family restaurant in Chicago? That is the story at the heart of The Bear, where a young chef returns to his roots. And a renovation of how to really make such a restaurant a success turns out to be quite difficult in the second season. Ultimately, we will experience the opening of the renovated restaurant in The Bear. It won't stop there, FX has already announced a third season.

Good Omens

Good Omens
Amazon Prime released the first part of the Good Omens series in 2019, based on the novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Suddenly, the second season happened this year. The series revolves around the birth of Satan's son and the stopping of the coming apocalypse. Angels and demons abound in this series with top actors such as David Tennant and Michael Sheen. And all that with a wonderful British lightness. On to the third and final season!

Only Murders in the Building

Only Murders in the Building
What if you could play detective yourself? That's basically the premise of Only Murders in the Building. This Hulu series is extremely entertaining and has a top cast with Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin. The third season focuses on the cast and crew of a Broadway show, where the trio manages to collect all kinds of clues, identify suspects and at the same time want to make the most important discovery themselves. A fourth season has been announced, although it may have to wait a while due to the now-ended writers' strike.

Sex Education

Sex Education
Sex Education has been a regular guest in this section in recent years. It should come as no surprise that the series has been nominated again this year. Yet that is less obvious than it seems. The fourth and final season was received very mixed by the general public. You hated it or you loved it. In the end, Otis and Maeve at least made it back to the list of nominations. It's up to you to choose where Sex Education ends up at the top this year.

Shrinking

Shrinking
The great Harrison Ford and comedy guru Jason Segel, with Jessica Williams and Christa Miller in important supporting roles. If Shrinking were not a success, Indiana Jones could also stop. Now perhaps Ford should have done that with the adventure film series, Shrinking is a hit for him. As a grief therapist who pays no attention to the rules, he tells his clients exactly what he thinks about their problems. This produces unexpected results. Simply a barrel of laughs!
Unfortunately, no reviews have been written about Shrinking as of yet

Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso
Just like Sex Education, Ted Lasso has also been on this list for several years. The American who became the head of an English football team - without any knowledge - still experiences the craziest things after three seasons - not least caused by himself. That starts well in the third season, when Lasso's AFC Richmond has been promoted but is only mocked in the local news - a last place in the Premier League is obvious. Fun for the Dutch is the trip for a friendly match against a certain big club from Amsterdam. With Jason Sudeikis in good form, Ted Lasso remains a must for every comedy lover.

That '90s Show

That ’90s Show
A new reboot of a successful comedy series is always a risk. Especially if an earlier reboot did not succeed. The success of That '70s Show certainly did not harm the then largely youthful cast - with one exception. The sequel - That '80s Show - could not cope with those high expectations. The series soon disappeared quietly. Netflix dared to re-air Red and Kitty Forman (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp) with a gang of new teenagers - some of them offspring of the former cellar visitors. That '90s Show is full of retrospective humor, recognizable elements and guest roles from old characters. Maybe that nostalgia is what makes it so much fun.

What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows
The series What We Do in the Shadows has been running for a few years and has already appeared in this entertaining category several times. The horror comedy tells the story of a group of vampires who have the greatest difficulty adapting to the modern world, with all the hilarity that comes with it. How do you pay the rent and who ensures that the cleaning schedule is adhered to? This fifth season we even saw a roast, while a pride parade is also organized by the vampires. Enough to talk about for another season.

Ten series, nominated by you, the readers, and the writers of My Series. One because he is so hilarious, the other because he knows all those intelligent jokes.
