Spotlight On: Himesh Patel

Spotlight On: Himesh Patel

Lights off, spotlight on! Time to see which series Himesh Patel also has on his resume.
A rising star, that's how we can describe Himesh Patel - in the middle of the header photo. This British-born actor is perhaps best known from a soap opera, but has been making a name for himself in recent years on both the big and small screen.

The soap opera we know Patel from is EastEnders. It is 2007 when Patel makes his debut in the daily concerns of the residents of Albert Square. Although there are actors who have appeared many times more often in an episode of the soap, his number of appearances - almost 600 - is impressive.

Patel plays Tamwar Masood in EastEnders. A role he reprises in quite a number of spin-offs and other side projects. For example, he can be seen in this role in EastEnders: E20, as well as in the Christmas special of the soap. He will also get a series based on his own character: Tamwar Tales: The Life of an Assistant Market Inspector.

In 2016, about ten years after his debut, Patel decided it was time to spread his wings. He leaves Tamwar Masood for what he is and appears in the series Damned (2016). This British comedy revolves around the goings-on in the office of social workers Rose and Al. The series eventually got two seasons and was rated quite well.

For Patel, Damned (2016) is a starting point to look further at what the world of television and film has offered him so far. He appears in a number of short films and appears in the comedies Climaxed and Motherland. He also lends his voice once in the Doctor Who podcast: Classic Doctor New Monsters.

An important appearance follows in the Beatles film Yesterday. Patel stars as Jack Malik, the only person on earth who can remember the Beatles' songs - and then unashamedly uses it for his own success. A role in The Aeronauts follows.

With Avenue 5, Patel returns to the small screen. This dark comedy starring Hugh Laurie explores the vastness of space. We watch and follow the lives and concerns of the rather spoiled crew of a spaceship that - logically - bears the title of the series. Patel appears in a recurring guest role before moving on to the mysterious Starz miniseries The Luminaries.

A real breakthrough in the United States follows for Patel when he subsequently manages to land a role in Christopher Nolan's Tenet. On the small screen he also appears in Station Eleven. An HBO series about a small group of people who appear to be the only survivors of a very deadly flu in a dystopian future.

Appearances follow in Ten Percent and Black Mirror, while he also continues to work on a number of podcasts. A new, permanent role in The Franchise is also planned for Patel in the coming period. This HBO production is about the crew of a beloved film franchise. They fight for their place in an unruly, special film universe that focuses on superheroes. That can only mean over-the-top chaos. We are super curious.
