Series of the Year 2024 - Best crime/detective series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2024 and focuses on the best crime/detective series of this year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 6, and Sunday February 10.
From series in which you try to find out who committed the murder, to series in which you try to find out the motives or experience the trial up close. Crime and detective series come in all shapes and sizes. And in 2024 we were once again able to sit on the edge of our seats waiting for what would happen in the next episode!

Below, in alphabetical order, the top ten nominees of the best series from 2024;

Blue Lights

Blue Lights
Leave it to the British to bring us good crime series. This includes Blue Lights, which has earned a nomination in this category for the second year in a row. We are taken back to Belfast, where plenty is happening. In Blue Lights the emphasis is more on the psychological aspect of the profession than on the action, but that definitely benefits the quality of the series. And we're not done yet, because the next seasons have already been announced!

Cross

Cross
James Patterson's books about Alex Cross have been adapted for the big screen several times, with varying degrees of success. Prime Video brought it to the smaller screen this year. Brilliant detective Alex Cross (with a background in psychology) must do everything he can to hunt down a serial killer, while dealing with some personal drama. With sufficient depth, disturbing crime and the necessary action, we can only conclude that this is the best version of Alex Cross on screen.

Fool me Once

Fool Me Once
The Dutch beignets of December 2023 had only just finished when we were treated to the new Harlan Coben series Fool me Once. From the moment Maya Stern sees her deceased wife on the nanny cam, we are taken into a deep and intense story in which you are constantly misled and the necessary twists follow one another. It was the perfect start to a beautiful 2024.

Lioness

Lioness
With names like Zoë Saldana, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman, there is plenty of star quality in this series. And that pays off. The second season of Lioness is full of dangerous missions that the undercover unit has to carry out and all the political intrigue that comes with it. The level has increased compared to the first season, which has resulted in this nomination.

Monsters

Monsters
After the first season of Monsters about Jeffrey Dahmer, the second season takes us to the murder of father and mother Menendez by their sons Lyle and Erik. The series largely takes place in the courtroom and shows how the trial went in the 1990s, the defense that the Menendez brothers put forward and their conviction. Whether it is all true remains to be seen, because new evidence now appears to have surfaced...

Reacher

Reacher
Cross was not Prime Video's only achievement in the field of crime series. Our favorite muscle man Reacher also returned this year. This war veteran who fights against injustice is clearly back in form in the second season, which was also packed with action. And despite the fact that the second season had to make do with a largely changed cast, the level of the series was old-fashioned high again. That is why, after its nomination in 2022, this series is also among the nominees this year.

The Gentlemen

The Gentlemen
Guy Richie proves that crime series can also be excellently combined with (at times dark) humor with his series The Gentlemen. Soldier Eddie Horniman returns home to say goodbye to his father, but suddenly becomes the new duke of the family due to his death. And let that family also have the necessary connections with the criminal circuit. Sufficient action, plot twists and beautiful dialogues earned this series a nomination.

The Penguin

The Penguin
In the last Batman film we had a brief moment of enjoyment when Colin Farell was virtually unrecognizable in his role as The Penguin. In The Penguin he is given the opportunity to further develop the character and he does so masterfully. The series is wonderfully raw and shows how the Penguin tries to work his way up in the dark Gotham at the expense of the ruling crime family.

The Responder

The Responder
After a nomination in 2022, The Responder has also made a wonderful return this year. It shows a wonderfully raw and dark picture of the police and the (sometimes corrupt) way in which they do their work. Martin Freeman is again very strong as Chris, the police officer who always manages to make the wrong decisions, but for whom you still feel sympathy.

True Detective

True Detective
It was a long wait, but the new season of True Detective was more than worth it. In the town of Ennis there is no light during the day for 65 days and this has an impact on the population. This is clearly palpable and if a group of scientists is murdered, it does not improve the mood. Dark, realistic, but with a touch of the supernatural. Need I say more?

In this list I think Blue Lights and The Responder are absolute toppers! Outside of that I also thought Criminal Record and Sherwood were very good series.

That will be an easy win for Reacher, but I still vote for The Penguin.

Guy Richie with his series The Gentlemen I found very entertaining with the necessary humor. Monsters about Jeffrey Dahmer I am still not sure, partly whether it is all true because new evidence has surfaced. The series I had been looking forward to for a long time also gets my vote, The Penguin.

Without hesitation: Reacher.

Usually I have a somewhat different taste. That is now also evident with Penguin. Everyone here is pretty much lyrical about it. I thought it was meh. Quite nice, well acted but predictable story. And what it ultimately had to do with Batman or with that world, was, apart from the names, completely unclear to me.
No, then Reacher. He certainly did not disappoint in his second season. I am also really looking forward to the third season.
