Series of the year 2018 - Best new series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2018 and discusses the category Best new series. Between Monday January 7th and Monday February 4th you can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others.
The past year we had plenty of new series to enjoy. So it was certainly not easy to nominate only ten series for this category. But together with the members of MySeries and my fellow writers I was able to put together a fine list. In contrast to last year, this time the Netflix series are in the minority.

The ten nominees for Best new series of 2018 are quite varied in genre and are all strong contenders. The choice is now yours. Will it be The Haunting of Hill House with our fellow Dutchman Michiel Huisman or the much-praised Killing Eve? We shall see, but first you all need to vote!

9-1-1

In the first week of the new year a new series premiered on FOX: 9-1-1. The brains behind this show is Ryan Murphy, also known from Glee, Scream Queens, American Horror Story and other shows. The series follows a team of first responders who risk their lives on a daily basis to help other people in need. Besides the impressive action scenes, the series also shows the personal lives of the cast. 9-1-1 is now in its second season. Famous actresses like Angela Bassett, Connie Britton and Jennifer Love Hewitt star in this show.

A discovery of Witches

A Discovery of Witches is based on the well-known trilogy written by Deborah Harkness. The series received favourable reviews and a second and third season have been confirmed. The British series, starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, revolves around Diana Bishop. She is, unbeknownst to herself, a very powerful witch. The series follows her personal development and her blossoming relationship with vampire Matthew Clairmont.

Altered Carbon

This Netflix sci-fi series takes place in the distant future. A person's memories and consciousness can be stored on a tiny disc in the neck. This disc allows a person to live forever, provided you have enough money. Criminal Takeshi Kovacs is hired by the rich Laurens Bancroft to solve a murder, the murder on Bancroft himself. After almost six months, Netflix has renewed the series with a second season.

Bodyguard

The second British series on this list. Bodyguard is a political thriller from BBC One, which can be watched on Netflix. Starring Game of Thrones veteran Richard Madden, this series was very successful in the UK. But also among MySeries members this show is very popular. The series follows Davis Budd, a bodyguard who is assigned to protect the Home Secretary Julia Montague. Quite reluctantly, because he doesn't agree with her political convictions.

Impulse

Impulse is a sci-fi series from YouTube – yes, you read it right, YouTube. The series revolves around Henrietta, a teenager who discovers she is able to teleport. The series deals with subjects like sexual assault and self discovery and is truly a hidden gem. This show is probably not as well-known as the other ones on this list, but certainly just as good. The second season will be available this year.

Killing Eve

Killing Eve definitely deserves to be on this list because of the much-praised acting skills of Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. This BBC America show revolves around the female assassin Villanelle and MI5 officer Eve Polastri. Eve discovers there's an assassin at work all over Europe and an intriguing and obsessive relationship develops between the two women. Time Magazine elected Killing Eve the best series of 2018 and it is also on the New York Times list of best series. The second season will probably be released in 2019.

Sharp Objects

This HBO miniseries is based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote Gone Girl. Amy Adams plays the lead role and does a great job. This dark series revolves around Camille Preaker who returns to her home town to report on the murder of two young girls. This assignment takes her back to her childhood home where some unpleasant memories are waiting for her. This series will not receive a second season, in contrast to the other HBO mini series Big Little Lies.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the much-discussed Netflix horror series which was released in October. The show is based on the Archie Horror comics and bears, besides the characters, no relation to the Nineties sitcom Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. This series tells the story of Sabrina Spellman, a young half-witch who must choose between living an ordinary human life or living as a Satan worshipping witch. The cast consists of, among others, newcomer Kiernan Shipka and Disney veteran Ross Lynch.

The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House is the first real Netflix series on this list and was inspired by the classic Gothic horror novel by Shirley Jackson. Because of all the promotion and marketing, this show was one of the most highly anticipated series of 2018. The series takes place in a remote mansion where soon all kinds of supernatural phenomena start to occur. The cast consists of Dutchman Michiel Huisman and other well-known names like Elizabeth Reaser and Kate Siegel.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan

This Amazon thriller series premiered in August and received mixed reviews. Still, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan was mentioned quite a lot by MySeries members as best new series. Jack Ryan is the inexperienced CIA analyst who is thrust into the world of international terrorism. This season primarily takes place in the Middle East and the next season will take place in South America.
