Series of the year 2019 - Best actress

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2019 and discusses the category of best actress. Between Monday January 6th and Monday February 3rd you can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others.
It is my honor to introduce the new category of best actress to the series of the year election. And I have to say it was not easy. So many members and so many solid actresses who could become the actress of the year. Everyone had a different opinion about this.

But in the end I managed to nominate five beautiful actresses. Unfortunately it is not possible to use a wild card for this category. So you'll have to do with these five. If you are going to vote via the app, download the latest version to be able to vote in this category as well.

Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale, Hulu)

This beautiful actress has been playing the role of a lifetime for three seasons in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale. In the science fiction series, Moss plays the role of June Osborn / Offred and knows how to keep the attention of the viewer. She has won an Emmy Award for her role in The Handmaid's Tale. She also won an Emmy for her role as producer of the series. In addition to the series, Moss has also played in West Wing, Top of the Lake, Fear Itself and Mad Men.

Helen McCory (Peaky Blinders, BBC One)

This actress plays the role of Polly Shelby Gray in Peaky Blinders and Thomas's aunt is not one to tackle without gloves. She stands her ground. But Peaky Blinders is not the only series in which this actress shines. Her impressive resume includes MotherFatherSon, Fearless, Penny Dreadful and Life. She won a Golden FIPA and was nominated for a Crime Thriller Award, for her brutal and no-nonsense role as Polly. She also received a Critics Choice Television Award for her role in Penny Dreadful.

Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies, HBO)

I think there are very few people who do not know this multiple Oscar winner. In Big Little Lies she plays the role of Mary Louise Wright. The mother of the deceased Perry Wright and mother-in-law of Celeste. With her sharp one-liners and rebuttals that are semi-funny and quick, the actress definitely steals the show. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for the series. Streep also played in series such as Web Therapy, Angels in America, and Holocaust.

Najwa Nimri (Vis a Vis, Antena 3)

In addition to being an actress, the beautiful Spanish is also a singer/songwriter. She played Alicia Sierra in the Netflix series La Casa de Papel. But according to the MySeries readers, she plays a fantastic role in the Spanish series Vis a Vis as Zulema "Zule" Zahir. For her role in Vis a Vis, she was nominated for the Feroz Awards, and won the Fotogramas de Plata as the best actress in 2019, in 2017 she was nominated for the prize. In 2016 she received a nomination from the Iris Awards in Spain and in 2015 she won the Ondas Award.

Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials, BBC One)

Wilson received her nomination for her role in His Dark Materials as Mrs. Coulter, but she could just as well have been nominated for her role in The Affair or Luther, we she also played a role in these series in 2019. But she also played in Mrs Wilson, Jane Eyre, The Prisoner and Suburban Shootout. The actress was frequently nominated and took a Golden Globe home for her role in The Affair as Alison Bailey. The British actress was nominated in 2019 for a BAFTA Award for best lead actress in Mrs Wilson.

Writer's pick

Because it is not possible to vote with a wild card in this category, I would like to nominate a candidate of my own choosing.

Elise Schaap (Familie Kruys, RTL 4)

In my opinion this Dutch actress is a brilliant actress who can credibly play a Romanian or someone from Brabant (a province in the Netherlands). This year Elise Schaap played the hilarious Ruxandra in the final season of Family Kruys. She also starred as Danielle Bouman in Undercover, the first Dutch Netflix original. The ease with which this woman takes on the role of a character is amazing. She also played in series such as Soof and Hart tegen Hart. This year, she quite rightly won the Televizier Ster Actor / Actress (Dutch awards for best actor/actress).

These were the six nominees selected by the readers, writers and me of MySeries. Good luck voting!

With kind regards,

Mandy
