Spotlight on: Sarah Chalke

Spotlight on: Sarah Chalke

Lights off, spotlight on! Time to see in which series this actor portrayed a character.
Many actors and actresses who had a big role in a successful comedy series, find it hard to get rid of being just that character. Jennifer Aniston will always be Rachel, and Neil Patrick Harris will always be Barney Stinson. Nonetheless, it doesn't mean that a few partake in a lot of different comedies. One of them is Sarah Chalke.

Chalke is an actress whom you may recognize from different series. Her debut in a recurring role in a television series dates back to 1993. She portrayed Becky in the rather successful comedy series Roseanne and still appears - albeit as a different character - in the 2018 reboot.

A couple of years after that - we're now in 1999 - she portrayed Gloria Hobson in Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy. After two unsuccessful seasons that series was cancelled.

Her true breakthrough happened two years after that. Chalke is then cast in a new hospital comedy called Scrubs, which was made by Bill Lawrence. As Elliot Reed, a somewhat spoiled and hypersensitive doctor in training, she enters Sacred Heart, the hospital nobody wants to be admitted to. Alongside J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison), she continues her education under the supervision of the macho Dr Perry Cox (John C. McGinley). Scrubs is a highly successful series - from which one scene about the spread of viruses is more current than ever - and Chalke is a big part of that. Her Elliot is funny, insecure, impulsive and naive all at the same time. Her heart is always in the right place.

As Scrubs still goes on - and maybe for a bit too long - Chalke is cast in a recurring role as Stella on How I Met Your Mother. And although she is a doctor here as well, her character is very different and a lot less loveable. A guest role in Cougar Town shows a whole other side to her acting talents.

She is then cast as the main character in How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life). This series doesn't meet expectations, and it doesn't take long before its cancelled. After only thirteen episodes - which all receive negative reviews - the series is hidden away in a dark corner.

What many don't know is that Chalke does a fair amount of voice acting. She can be heard in American Dad, Milo Murphy's Law, Rick and Morty and Paradise PD. Next to all that, she also had roles in Friends from College and Speechless.

Still in 2020 (December 31st), Chalke can be seen in a new series; Firefly Lane. She will portray the introvert Kert alongside Katherine Heigl's Tully, a daredevil who will change her life. As far as we're concerned, that's something to look forward to!
