Corona crisis; which series to watch? Top 5 best Spanish series

It has become a well-known image, empty supermarket shelves, empty squares and shopping malls. People work from home or not at all. How can you spend that time? We have made a top 5 displaying series you could watch in these peculiar times.
As the weather outside is beautiful, and the walls appear to be coming straight for us at times, it is only logical that we want to escape reality. For me, that's easiest done by watching Spanish series. Here is my top-five list consisting of Spanish series.

5. Jugar con Fuego

Fabrizio Ramírez works on a coffee plantation, where he is responsible for running the plantation store. Fabrizio came from Mexico and now lives in Colombia. He loves love. Only now he decides to love two women, which means that he is playing with fire. If you want to escape reality, step into the lives on this coffee plantation and let yourself be carried away by passion, lust and murder.

4. Toy Boy

Toy Boy tells the story of Hugo, a stripper who finds himself waking up on a boat next to a burning body. The night before he partied away with his lover and this burning body turns out to he be the husband of his lover. Hugo is sentenced to fifteen years in jail until seven years after his conviction young lawyer Triana is presented with the case file. She notices something is wrong with the verdict. Hugo is released on parole, and alongside his partners and lawyer, he tries to prove his innocence. Don't let yourself be distracted by the trailer, which mainly features stripping men. Instead, enjoy a story that is exciting enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.

3. The Pier

An architect called Alexandra ends up in a nightmare after a successful night. She finds out her husband Oscar passed away. He is found on a pier in the Spanish Albufeira landscapes, just outside Valencia. The police think it was a suicide. Alexandra finds this difficult to believe and decides to investigate the matter. Here she finds a single mother called Veronica. She knew Oscar. The Pier, or El Embarcadero as it is called in Spanish, is a beautiful drama series starring Álvaro Morte (El Profesor from La Casa de Papel) in the lead.

2. Velvet/ The Velvet Collection

Velvet tells the tale of Ana and Alberto. She is a seamstress in the atelier of fashion house Velvet, and he is the boss. That they're both in love is obvious, but that the love is difficult if not impossible, that's a whole different story. Velvet revolves around the love and sorrows of not just the two main characters, but also all the other employees. They all seem to work with a tremendous amount of love and passion in the large fashion house in Madrid in the 50s. Velvet is a great series filled with romance, nice music and beautiful dresses. The sequel The Velvet Collection carries on where Velvet ended. The viewer gets to witness the introduction of the petticoat and the mini skirt.

1. La Casa de Papel

You take one genius man, who calls himself El Profesor, and eight people who have nothing to lose. With these people, you rob the Royal Mint of Spain. Not to steal the money, but to print it. 2.4 billion euros to be precise. An important precondition is that blood must not be spilt. Unfortunately, they can't uphold that. What follows is an amazing and nerve-racking adventure, with an intriguing cat and mouse game between police and robbers. For me, the love for Spanish series started with La Casa de Papel. By now, four parts have released, and a fifth and sixth have already been announced.

Making a top-five is nigh impossible, considering there are so many good Spanish series. Another example is La Catedral del Mar, which is based on the novel with the same name from Ildefonso Facones. This beautiful historical pearl takes place in medieval Barcelona. If Spanish series aren't your thing, don't worry. There will be more top-five lists coming out soon! Stay safe!
