Corona crisis; which series to watch? Top 5 best mockumentary series

Many great, fun and interesting top-five lists have been released to fill the time we would usually fill with going out and visiting relatives. Enjoy watching!
Not every series has to be fictional. Sometimes it can be fun to learn about new things. The BBC has been creating beautiful nature documentaries, such as Planet Earth, for years. Criminals and serial killers seem to enjoy a lot of screentime on Netflix for the last couple of years. I mean, who wasn't enthralled by Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness and Making a Murderer? But sometimes it is fun to watch a series that pretends to be a documentary. A show such as that is called a mockumentary. This genre is divided into two subcategories; the true fake documentary, and the series that has characters talking to each other in between scenes. A lot of famous comedy series are part of that second category.

5. What We Do in the Shadows

This series is based on the film with the same name from 2014. It revolves around four vampires who live in an old mansion in New York, along with their human protector. The vampires tell things about their existence and how they keep themselves occupied with sucking blood and fighting with werewolves. Other themes include collecting the mail and dealing with obnoxious neighbours. What We Do in the Shadows combines the best elements of a vampire horror series and a roommate comedy, and manages to make fun of both at the same time.

4. Parks and Recreation

Local government official Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) considers it her mission to turn a gaping hole in the middle of the town into a beautiful park. As she and her colleagues talk to the cameras, the town has to deal with budget cuts, loss of face, bureaucracy, conflict of interests and more. Parks and Recreation is a series from Michael Schur, who is also known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office and The Good Place. All of these series have a typical Schur style.

3. The Office UK

The American version is prominently present in earlier lists, but the British original deserves some recognition as well. On the sales department of paper company Wernham Hogg, a lot seems to happen, but the employees don't work very hard. A lot of famous office jokes became well-known thanks to this series, and they were brought perfectly by actors such as; Mackenzie Crook, Ricky Gervais and Martin Freeman. This series also served as the foundation for various remakes, from which the most well-known one is the American.

2. Cunk on Britain
The Brexit is a fact, and the British have won back their identity. But what is the British identity? Philomena Cunk digs through the past to find an answer to this question. In five episodes, she takes you through thousands of years worth of British history. As she stands in front of historical monuments, walks past various displays in museums and interviews historians, she talks total nonsense. Cunk on Britain has been written by Charlie Brooker. He also created Black Mirror.

1. American Vandal

With the popularity of Making a Murderer and other similar documentaries, Netflix also decided to parody American Vandal. Someone has drawn penises all over the cars of teachers during a break at a high school. The management team quickly finds a suspect. Two students don't believe this and create a documentary where they try to find the truth. American Vandal starts as a banal, but a very striking parody of the genre, but gradually evolves into a unique phenomenon.

As I said, many well and lesser-known comedies are actually mockumentaries. Modern Family, Trailer Park Boys and Arrested Development all fit the category. And sometimes series do a specific mockumentary episode. We've had series such as Community and Entourage that had such episodes. Even The X Files did one at some point. Would you rather watch real documentaries? Or have you seen all of these? Don't worry. There will be more top-five lists coming soon.
