Netflix unveils return of several successful series for 2024

Several successful Netflix series will be shown again this year and the streamer reveals which ones those are.
Netflix has confirmed that the second season of the Korean drama series Squid Game will air in 2024. We can also expect the second seasons of The Diplomat (US) and The Empress/Die Kaiserin and the third season of Bridgerton.

Squid Game

“Looking ahead, despite last year’s strikes pushing back the launch of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024,” the company said in its investor letter after its financials.

Squid Game debuted on Netflix on September 17, 2021, and became a global phenomenon. The series clocked over 1.65B viewing hours in 28 days and reached 111 million accounts, becoming Netflix’s first series to surpass 100 million members at launch. It remains the most-watched series ever on Netflix.

Season 2 will see Lee Byung-hun returning as Front Man and Wi Ha-jun, who will revisit the character of police detective Jun-ho. Gong Yoo will be coming back as well.

New cast includes Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun as well as Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an.

Hwang Dong-hyuk is returning to direct and executive produce the sophomore season of the series that will start production this year.

The Diplomat (US)

The Diplomat (US), starring Keri Russell, was renewed for a second season in May. The political drama comes from Debora Cahn, who is also executive producer alongside Janice Wiliams, Russell and Alex Graves.

The series follows Kate Wyler (Russell) as the new American ambassador to the United Kingdom. She must resolve international crises, forge strategic alliances in London and adapt to her new place in the spotlight - all while trying to survive in her marriage to fellow diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh also star.

Netflix previously revealed that now "ultra-sexy" Bridgerton will return in two parts - the first part on Thursday, May 16, and the second on Thursday, June 13. The eight-part drama comes from Shonda Rhimes' Shondaland.

Finally, The Empress, originally titled Die Kaiserin, is a German drama series that started in September 2022. The leading roles are played by Devrim Lingnau as the eponymous Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, Philip Froissant, Johannes Nussbaum and Almila Bagriacik.

Did anyone else just not get Squid Game? It was very weird! Maybe that's why so many of us watched it. Or at least tried.
