Robin Wright directs and stars in Prime Video drama The Girlfriend

Robin Wright will be wearing multiple hats for her next series, a drama on Prime Video titled The Girlfriend.

Wright (pictured) stars, directs and executive produces the series, which is based on a novel by Michelle Frances. Olivia Cooke, Laurie Davidson and Waleed Zuaiter also star in the series from Amazon MGM Studios and Imaginarium Productions.

Wright plays Laura, a woman with a great career, a loving husband (Howard, played by Zuaiter) and a close relationship with her son Daniel (Davidson). Things take a turn when Daniel brings home his new girlfriend Cherry (Cooke). “After an awkward first meeting,” the series description reads, “Laura becomes convinced that Cherry is not who she says she is.

While no one else sees what she sees, Laura refuses to watch Daniel be deceived. She will do anything to protect him. As things go from bad to deadly, the question is: is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura paranoid and possessive? The truth is a matter of perspective."

“I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast & crew…so excited!” Wright said.

“The Girlfriend is a suspenseful family drama about the collapse of a mother and son’s bond, shown through relatable themes of love, greed, and power,” Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios said. “This series speaks directly to our Pan-English strategy maintained by Rola Bauer and we’re thrilled to work with Imaginarium and Robin Wright in adapting Michelle Frances’ compelling story for our global Prime Video customers.”

Gabbie Asher and Naomi Sheldon adapted Frances' novel. Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies, Isis Davis and Helen Kingston are also the series' writers. Caroline Norris is the series producer. Imaginarium's Jonathan Cavendish, Wright, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, Dave Clarke, Asher and Frances are the executive producers.

Wright previously directed two episodes of the drama series Ozark (Netflix) and is best known for her role as Claire Underwood in House of Cards (2013) (Netflix).

Cooke plays Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon (HBO) and has previously appeared in Bates Motel (A&E) and Vanity Fair (2018) (ITV).

Davidson recently appeared in an episode of Masters of the Air (Apple TV+) and had a recurring role on Mary & George (Sky Atlantic). He will soon also be seen in The Road Trip (Paramount+).

Zuaiter is known for his role as Koba in Gangs of London (Sky Atlantic/AMC+). He also starred in the French-English miniseries The Spy with Sacha Baron Cohen, which can be seen on Netflix, and the cyberpunk series Altered Carbon (Netflix).
