Anne-Marie Duff cast in BBC thriller series Reunion about a deaf ex-con

Actress Anne-Marie Duff has boarded BBC thriller series Reunion.
The series follows a deaf man determined to right his wrongs as he unravels the truth behind the events that landed him in prison.

BAFTA winner Duff (pictured) will play Christine opposite leading man Matthew Gurney, Eddie Marsan, Lara Peake and Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis, who has landed a number of roles recently.

The four-part series, written by emerging deaf creative William Mager, started filming this week in and around Sheffield in the north of England. It promises to be a milestone in storytelling for all, as the majority of the cast are deaf or use British Sign Language. There are also a number of options for deaf crew members.

In Reunion, recently released prisoner Daniel Brennan embodies the struggle of a man caught between two worlds, unable to fully integrate into the hearing world and shunned by his closest friends and the deaf community after a horrific crime. Amid this isolation, his only meaningful relationship is with his estranged daughter Carly, with whom he has had no contact since his arrest ten years ago.

“It is rare to witness a narrative where the audience is taken on a journey with a very different set of senses,” said Duff, who won a BAFTA in 2023 for Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters and has been nominated for four others. “It’s about our need to acknowledge each other’s truths – both inside our own families and beyond.”

The series is produced by The Virtues maker Warp Films, whose boss Mark Herbert said: “Reunion stands as a testament to our commitment at Warp Films for genuine representation and thrilling inclusive storytelling that resonates with all audiences whilst amplifying the voices and talents of an often-overlooked community both on and off screen”.

Reunion is directed by Luke Snellin, with Helen Ostler as producer and Siobhan Morgan as associate producer. Herbert and Gwen Gorst are executive producers on Warp, alongside series writer Mager, with Rebecca Ferguson and Jo McClellan for the BBC. BBC Studios will distribute the series internationally.

Reunion was on a list of twelve BBC dramas alongside a television version of James Graham's Dear England and Aimee Lou Wood's debut writing project.

Duff also starred in the BBC limited drama series The Salisbury Poisonings and appeared in Netflix's teen sex comedy series Sex Education and the BBC/HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials.
