Animated series Minecraft in development at Netflix with new characters

Netflix is ​​developing a new animated series based on the immensely popular Minecraft sandbox game. Few details are known yet, but Netflix says the series will "feature an original story with new characters that shows the Minecraft world in a new light."

The announcement came last Thursday, May 30, on the video game's 15th anniversary.



In Minecraft, players explore a blocky, pixelated, procedurally generated, three-dimensional world with virtually infinite terrain. Players can discover and mine resources, craft tools and items, and build structures, earthworks, and machines. Depending on the game mode, players can fight against enemy gangs and team up or compete against other players in the same world.

Netflix will co-produce the CG-animated series with Mojang Studios, the game's Swedish developer. Canadian animation studio WildBrain provides the animation.

A Minecraft movie is also in the works. Directed by Jared Hess from a screenplay by Chris Bowman and Hubble Palmer, the film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement. The film is produced by Legendary Pictures, Mojang and Vertigo Entertainment. The release is scheduled for April 4, 2025.
