Comedy series based on film Car Wash in development at NBC

Universal Pictures' 1976 cult classic Car Wash is getting the small screen treatment.
The series comes from producer Malcolm D. Lee and writer Opey Olagbaju. A Universal Television comedy series of the same name is in development at NBC.

Set in a modern DC car wash, the series focuses on the generational and culture clashes of an immigrant family between father and son and their eclectic group of employees.

The logline reveals many similarities to the original film, but uses the television format to make the story much bigger. The Michael Schultz-directed film follows the lives of a group of Los Angeles friends who work at the Dee-Luxe Car Wash and the interesting characters they interact with on a Friday in July.

Many household names were part of the large ensemble cast, including Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, Pepe Serna, Sully Boyar, the Pointer Sisters and Garrett Morris, to name a few.

While it's still far too early to speculate on the casting, there are still many cast members who could definitely make a cameo, such as Ajaye, Duke, Serna, and Morris, should Olagbaju want to appeal to fans' nostalgia.

Olagbaju is a Nigerian-American writer and comedian who has co-written popular series such as CBS' Bob Hearts Abishola, Hulu's This Fool and HBO Max's animated series Close Enough.

He produces alongside Lee, who is best known for writing and directing his hit The Best Man franchise, including his latest installment, Peacock's The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

In addition to Olagbaju and Lee, Dominique Telson will also be involved as an executive producer. Her recent credits include The Best Man: The Final Chapters and the indie film Good Girl Jane. Michael Allen is the co-executive producer of the Car Wash comedy series.
