Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, directors and screenwriters respectively of the 2023 Blue Beetle film, will produce alongside John Rikard, who worked on the film in the same capacity. Galen Vaisman, who served as executive producer on the film, will oversee the animated television series for DC Studios.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation declined to comment for this story.
Many things are still in flux, including contracts for the main cast, but several have been approached and DC has received a positive response about the return. Sources understand that the animated series will build on the film, which was developed under the previous DC Studios regime, but will not tell the same story.
Instead, the series will create its own story that, if successful, could potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue beetle portrayed by Xolo Maridueña, according to sources.
The Blue Beetle movie focused on the third titular superhero character in the comics, Jaime Reyes, a popular teen from El Paso. Blue Beetle was created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski for Fox Comics, and Reyes first appeared in comic books in 2006 in the high-tech alien armor.
Maridueña's Blue Beetle is shown as a recent college graduate returning home to figure out what he wants to do with his life. As he takes a job alongside his younger sister Milagro (Belissa Escobedo), he finds himself at odds with Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), of the infamous Kord Industries, while defending Victoria's beautiful niece Jenny (Bruna Marquezine).
The Kord family drama explodes after Jaime unknowingly gets his hands on an alien scarab that has the power to turn special containers into Blue Beetle. It is very rare for whoever possesses the scarab to transform into the superhero, but it works miraculously for Jaime, ruining Kord Industries' plans for world domination.
The film follows Jaime's adventures from unemployed law school graduate with no prospects, to giving Kord the fight of his life.
