Series adaptation in the making of classic comedy film The 'Burbs

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to The 'Burbs, a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 Universal Pictures horror-comedy film of the same name.
Celeste Hughey (Palm Royale, Dead to Me) will write and executive produce the mystery comedy series starring Keke Palmer (pictured), also executive producing the project from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson are producing for Fuzzy Door under the company's umbrella UCP deal, along with Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment, which produced the 1989 film. Dana Olsen, the writer of the film directed by Joe Dante, will serve as co-executive producer for the series.

Set in today's suburbs, The 'Burbs follows a young couple - Palmer plays the wife - who return to the man's childhood home. Their world is turned upside down when new neighbors move in next door, exposing the cul-de-sac's old secrets and new deadly threats shattering the illusion of their peaceful neighborhood.

The series will be shot in Los Angeles in the same location as the original 1989 film, the backyard of Universal Studios Hollywood.

The film, which stars Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher as the couple, as well as Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman, has achieved cult status after a disappointing start at the box office. The film is streaming on Peacock.

This is the last Universal film to be turned into a series for Peacock. The list also includes MacFarlane's Ted, which has been renewed for a second season.

Mystery comedy series are finding newfound success with hits like Hulu's Only Murders in the Building and Peacock's own Poker Face and Based on a True Story.
