The Darkness follows Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir (Lena Olin) as she investigates a shocking murder case while coming to terms with her own traumas. Threatened with early retirement and forced to work with a new partner, Hulda is determined to find the killer, even if it means risking her own life.
In addition to Oscar® nominee Lena Olin (Alias), the cast also includes Jack Bannon (Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler), Douglas Henshall (Shetland), Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (A Gentleman in Moscow), Thorsteinn Bachmann (Katla), Þorvaldur Davíð Kristjánsson (Ráðherrann), Tora Hallström, Ahd Tamimi and Árni Þór Lárusson. The series is directed by two-time Oscar nominee Lasse Hallström, who makes his debut as a TV director.
British casting was provided by Suzanne Crowley and Gilly Poole. Tinna Aðalbjörndottir and Andrea Brabin in Reykjavík were responsible for the entire casting in Iceland. The Darkness was written by Sam Shore (CBBC's MYSTIC).
