One day he meets Gita (Anna Próchniak) when he tattoos her prisoner number on her arm. They experience love at first sight and so begins a courageous, unforgettable and human story. Under constant surveillance by a volatile Nazi SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lali and Gita are determined to keep each other alive.
About sixty years later, Lali (Harvey Keitel) meets aspiring writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey). Recently widowed, he finds the courage to tell his story to the world. By telling his story to Heather in his eighties, he is confronted with the traumatic ghosts of his youth and relives his memories of falling in love in the most horrific places.
Peacock has chosen Thursday, May 2 as the premiere date for The Tattooist of Auschwitz. In addition, the series will air on the same day on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Executive producers are Claire Mundell under her label Synchronicity Films, Serena Thompson for Sky Studios and writer Jacquelin Perske. In addition to Perske, co-producer Evan Placey and Gabbie Asher are also the writers. Tali Shalom-Ezer directed all six episodes and served as co-executive producer.
Heather Morris, the author of the novel on which the series is based, provided advice on the project. Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve are behind the musical score.
