Nikita - Season 3

After two seasons of 'Nikita' and all of the problems within Division, you would expect this "black-ops" organisation to be running out of stories. Well, think again, because the third season is another good one. The show still lives up to its quote; ‘looks do kill’. With the government involved as well now, it’s about to become a whole new Division. Ryan Fletcher (Noah Bean, 'Damages') is running the place and the main characters are back at HQ. The president is keeping an eye on things from now on, too. Division is running a new course, one that will bring new opportunities but also new problems.

Season three starts off with the search for the "Dirty Thirty”, a collective term for the rogue agents that haven’t returned to Division after the call-back that took place after Percy’s death. Most of season three will revolve around these men and women. They're causing a lot of problems for the American government, which is trying to shut down Division. It’s up to Nikita (Maggie Q) and her team to solve these problems. Together with Michael (Shane West, 'ER'), Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca, 'Desperate Housewives'), and Sean (Dillon Casey, 'MVP: The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives'), Nikita allows things to go back to normal as they’re send on missions to help Division. Birkhoff (Aaron Stranford) is also back behind the computers at Division’s headquarters with Sonya's help (Lyndie Greenwood) this time. Their relationship has changed since we last saw them and they find it difficult to separate the working life from the private one. Especially since they now work together even more closely than before. Alex and Sean go through some relation issues of their own as well, while Michael proposes to Nikita during the first episode of this season. A nice start of their new life, you’d think, but not as long as Amanda (Melinda Clarke, 'The O.C.') is still alive. As you can see, there’s still room for romance amongst all the action.

Amanda, who is on the run with her boyfriend Ari Tasarov (Peter Outerbridge, 'ReGenesis'), still wants to ruin Nikita. She has many "friends" around the world to help her accomplish that but luckily the same can be said about Nikita. Owen (Devon Sawa) turns up again as well (as one of the regulars) and will cause a massive change within Division.

There’s a lot about to happen in the 22 episodes of season three. Ryan tries to save Division and its agents with the help of Nikita. But can an organisation that has done so many bad things in the past, run by people who officially don’t even exist anymore, be saved? They’re not going down without trying, that’s for sure, and by the end of season three we’ll know if they succeed. There are also more storylines explaining what happened to certain characters before they entered Division. I loved those episodes in particular. We’ll finally find out what made Amanda the way she is and Owen’s true identity will also be revealed near the end of season three.

When you watch the first and final episodes of this season you’ll hardly recognise the fact that they're part of the same series. But I think that’s probably Nikita’s strength. Even though the development of the story is quite fast, the storylines remain easy to follow. The only problem I came across, while writing this review, is that it’s hard not to give away any spoilers while writing about this series. The one thing I can say is that this season of Nikita has surprised me, again, in a very positive way! It has strong plot twists, good action scenes, thrilling and emotional stories which keep the viewers entertained even though some parts are rather unrealistic. Unfortunately, I’m afraid they can’t keep this level of entertainment up for very long. The creators of the series recently announced that the next season of 'Nikita' will be the last one and will consist of six episodes. A wise decision, I think, even though I’ll miss 'Nikita'. With the season three cliff-hanger in the back of my mind I have high hopes for season four. I’m expecting a great ending for this show that has kept me highly entertained for many hours already!
