No Man's Land - Miniseries (DVD)

There's no going back in No Man's Land.

The young Frenchman Antoine (Félix Moati, 50 nuances de Grecs) sees his sister, who is believed dead, in a television report about Syria. On a whim and full of expectation, Antoine heads to Syria. He ends up between the warring Kurds and IS members. The result is that Antoine has to choose. Continue his quest and fight or choose his own safety.

What remains is a realistic look into the world of IS and the Kurds of YPG.

In addition to Antoine's quest, No Man's Land shows a realistic picture of the warring parties in the heyday of IS in northern Syria. The makers do this not only from the perspective of the Kurdish militia YPG. There is also a lot of attention for a group of friends from England who have chosen IS. What follows is a dreary world full of horrors, struggle and loss. A fight for survival. Each from his/her own (partly fanatical) point of view.

Well-timed flashbacks provide more and more background on why the various protagonists ended up in Syria. This helps take the story to the next level and makes it come together more and more later. A choice has been made for this that will not please everyone. It makes No Man's Land more of a spy story. The big question is whether the series has become stronger as a result. In any case, this choice helps to bring the different storylines together. Personally, this spying part doesn't bother me, but I can imagine that it is a bit too much for some.

Even the bright sun cannot give the television series a more colorful image.

The images are choppy and fit perfectly with the intense story. The colors are restrained. That also makes sense with all those camouflage colors of military outfits and the black of IS. Even the bright sun cannot give the television series a more colorful image. The images of the fighting, the injured and the dead are explicit without being portrayed too intensely. The suggestion often works better than actually portraying it. For example, there is the beheading of someone just out of the picture. The horror is no less.

What remains is a realistic look into the world of IS and the Kurds of YPG. It is a pity that fiction sometimes takes over a little too much, but it does not bother me. The fact is that quality is delivered, in image and execution. The realism is also there thanks to the strong roles that the various actors play. Plus, the battle scenes feel eerily real. The atrocities are not forgotten. By regularly placing it more in the (vaguely shot) background, the impact is increased. Of course, the direct and clearly depicted atrocities are also terrible to see. In short, not for people who cannot tolerate (realistic) violence and suffering. It is and remains a painfully sharp image of a terrible place and time.
