Only Murders in the Building - Season 3

With a strong ending, the sometimes somewhat shaky third season of Only Murders in the Building is pretty decent.

Only Murders in the Building has been seamlessly interweaving different television genres for a few years now. Comedy, drama, crime and a little bit of musical are the main ingredients of this series. As amateur detectives, artist Mabel (Selena Gomez, Wizards of Waverly Place), theater director Oliver (Martin Short, Mulaney) and actor Charles (Steve Martin, Saturday Night Live) still try to solve a different murder in and around their New York apartment building every season.

In season three they chase the murderer of famous actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd, Friends). Ben had the lead role in Oliver's latest play, but during the premiere he falls dead on stage. According to the trio, the police arrested the wrong person and they suspect that someone from the cast or crew was responsible for Ben's death.

This third season contains many of the same qualities as the first two seasons. Steve Martin and Martin Short are as always excellently attuned to each other and it is a pleasure to see the two old men bickering with perfect comic timing, and Selena Gomez is also not inferior to them. This trio is at their best when the two generations collide and Mabel has to explain how the language and perception of today's youth work.

Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are two strong additions to the cast

We also have two star actors to strengthen the cast this season. First of all, of course, is Paul Rudd, who does a fantastic job as an arrogant actor. Yet as a viewer you learn that although Ben was a huge jerk, he did not deserve to die in such a gruesome way. This gives his character the necessary nuance and makes him a tragic figure. In addition, Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies) also gives a beautiful and intimate performance as Loretta Durkin, an older actress who finally gets to play her first major role in a play. On the one hand, she shows childlike enthusiasm and a love for theater. On the other hand, she does an excellent job of exposing the vulnerability of her character.

This season uses a theater setting as the backdrop for this season and that is a strong move. As nice as the hallways and apartments of a stately old apartment building are, this setting gives the series a lot of new things to work with. The well-known clichés from the theater world, such as auditions and rehearsals, provide enough material to joke about. There are also several musical numbers that sound particularly catchy and are guaranteed to stay in your head for days.

Despite all this, I found the third season to be a bit shaky story-wise, especially halfway through the season. The first few episodes are full of delightful twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But as soon as the real investigation into Ben's death begins, everything seems to falter and the quality decreases considerably. It's still fun to watch because of all the actors and subtle humor, but the series seems to have lost its spark.

Halfway through the season, the series sometimes feels a bit rudderless

In the first two seasons, Only Murders in the Building neatly dealt with a different suspect in each episode, before finally identifying the real culprit in the finale. In this season the suspicions are a bit mixed up. It's good that they're trying to shake up the well-known formula, but in this form, I didn't always think it worked well. The series loses its structure and focus and feels rather directionless. The fact that the three main characters share little screen time with each other during these episodes also makes it less fun to watch.

Towards the end of the season, however, a switch seems to turn and Only Murders in the Building once again delivers the top quality we are used to. The last few episodes are again full of unexpected twists, finally bringing Oliver, Charles and Mabel together and delivering spectacle on both a large and small scale. These episodes lead to a logical and well-rounded conclusion as we saw during the first two seasons. And as always, the final scene makes you very curious about the next season.

Despite a sometimes weaker storyline, season three of Only Murders in the Building otherwise delivers the quality we have come to expect from them. With a theater setting, fantastic actors and an intriguing mystery, this season is once again rock solid. Season four has already been announced and I'm really looking forward to it.
