Speaking at AMC's TCA press tour Tuesday, Esposito said New Orleans is a "city of demons."

“It’s a city that has a majority of churches, more than any other city in America,” he said. “It’s a city with bars on every corner, where you can party until 4 in the morning. It seems like a place where you have to make a choice, and our show’s a lot about the choices that Gracian Parish makes, whether they be good choices or bad choices and how they affect his family. It was so much about the family and community, not only the city, but also of two different men and their families and how they tend to deal with the circumstances surrounding them. This was a city that was the right one.”

The series debuts March 31 on AMC and the AMC+ streaming service following the finale of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Lives.

Esposito, who said it took about eight years to get the series to the screen, shared that it could move to other cities if it is renewed for a second season

“There are other cities like this, and who knows where we could go in the future,” he added, “but right now, the world seems to be a place where you struggle with the ghosts of your past and the ghosts of your future.”

Parish follows the eponymous character, whose son is violently murdered and his business collapses. A meeting with an old friend from his days as a driver brings back old habits and sends him on a dangerous course with a violent criminal syndicate.

The series is based on the British series The Driver, starring Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds) as Zimbabwean New Orleans gangster The Horse, Paula Malcomson (Ray Donovan) as Rose, Parish's wife and mother of his two children . Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale) is Colin, an old acquaintance of Gray's.

Bonnie Mbuli (Noughts and Crosses) plays Shamiso Tongai, The Horse's smart and protective older sister, Ivan Mbakop (Marvel's Hawkeye) stars as Zenzo, The Horse's brother, Arica Himmel (Mixed-ish) is Gray and Rose's daughter Makayla and Dax Rey plays The Horse's son Luke. Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid's Tale) has a recurring role as Anton, the charming and intelligent face of Louisiana industry who secretly heads a criminal organization. His dispute with The Horse's human traffickers brings him into conflict with Parish. Amanda Brugel (The Handmaid's Tale) guest stars as Sister Anne, who has a mysterious past with Gray.

Parish is produced by AMC Studios, in association with A+E Studios and Thruline Entertainment.

Danny Brocklehurst is co-creator and executive producer. Eduardo Javier Canto and Ryan Maldonado serve as showrunners and executive producers.

Giancarlo Esposito also produces alongside Brocklehurst, Poyser, Theo Travers, Jolyon Symonds and David Morrissey for Scribbler Films, Josh Kesselman, Danny Sherman, Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson for A+E Studios and Nicola Shindler of Red Production.
