In New York, Betty applies at an employment agency, but she refuses to give hometown references. The employment counselor realizes Betty is in over head and suggests she go back to Peyton Place. Betty leaves in tears and meets a beautiful young woman named Sharon Purcell in the corridor. Sharon invites Betty for coffee, correctly surmising that the small-town girl could use a friend. At the Harrington mansion, Leslie is anxious to see Laura leave. She gets drunk on brandy and laments how quickly life passes. Laura urges Norman to accept the fact that his mother is gone, then advises Rodney to make a decision about his marriage and his life.
