Filming for the new season is tentatively scheduled to begin in September. Although the story is set in the Texas Hill Country, Ransom Canyon will be filmed in New Mexico, with production once again taking place at Netflix Studios Albuquerque, where the first season was filmed.
Blair said: "I'm thrilled that Netflix is ready to jump back in the saddle with Ransom Canyon. Our dreamy corner of the Texas Hill Country is full of untold stories, and we can't wait to share them with our amazing fans. Get ready for a new adventure."
In addition to Duhamel and Kelly, the first season cast included James Brolin, Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Andrew Liner, Garrett Wareing, Jack Schumacher, and Marianly Tejada. Except for Brolin, whose story arc was concluded, the remaining actors will likely return in season two. A new character is also being introduced: Yancy's wife (played by Schumacher), who was briefly seen at the end of the season finale, only from behind.
The mysterious woman was played by Erica Dasher, known for Blair’s previous Freeform series Jane By Design. She was visiting the set and offered to act as a stand-in, on the condition that she audition for the role. Blair said in April that the writers are now developing her character, who has a “fun personality and a very juicy backstory.”
Ransom Canyon is part of Netflix’s “comfort entertainment” category, which also includes series such as Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, The Lincoln Lawyer and My Life with the Walter Boys. The series centers on three ranching dynasties in the Texas Hill Country who struggle to preserve their land, their lives and their legacy, while outside forces threaten their way of life.
