Renegade Nell - Season 1
Renegade Nell is a fun and smooth series full of action, adventure, humor and a bit of depth.
The concept of highwayman has a lot more meaning in the British Isles than in the Netherlands. There are many legends and folktales about the Highwaymen, armed robbers who sat in ambushes waiting for rich people's carriages full of gold to pass by. Renegade Nell also plays on those legends and adds a supernatural component. When young widow Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland, Derry Girls) is accused of murder, she flees and starts life as a highwayman. Aided by a ghost who gives her superhuman powers, she tries to get justice for her and her family.
Renegade Nell is a series by Sally Wainwright, known for Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack and Scott & Bailey. In all these series, women play the leading roles in male-dominated worlds. Renegade Nell also uses this fact. Although the series is largely light-hearted in tone, Wainwright occasionally makes a strong point about the position of women in the eighteenth century, and we see this through the eyes of Nell, her sisters and several other female characters.
This series makes nice use of all kinds of figures from English folk beliefs. Perhaps names like Billy Blind or Herne the Hunter will not mean much in the Netherlands, but no prior knowledge of folklore is necessary. Although the story is reasonably completed, and Nell and her loved ones get a fitting ending, there is still more than enough room for another season. For example, the circumstances of the special powers that Nell and her opponents possess are not fully explained. If there is a second season, I hope the story goes into more depth.
Renegade Nell is a very fun series. It has an interesting premise, is fun to watch and has an excellent cast with Louisa Harland in the lead. Nothing is known yet about a possible second season, but I very much hope that it will happen.

After the first episode I was positive about Renegade Nell, and after watching the entire first season I still am. Renegade Nell is a smooth series that, first and foremost, offers a lot of entertainment. The first season consists of eight episodes of around forty minutes. The pace is very high and contains a lot of action. Most scenes are beautifully filmed. Although the decoration may not be entirely accurate historically, it does look good. The music is also very nice and atmospheric.The pace is high and the focus is on entertainment

What is also very nice is the acting of the leading actors. Louisa Harland's pleasure in this role is infectious. In addition to Harland, Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead) stands out as a somewhat clumsy highwayman with whom Nell makes an alliance. Most of the humor comes from his side. In addition, Adrian Lester (Hustle) is excellently cast as the evil nobleman with supernatural powers. Although his motives don't have much depth, his character is extremely entertaining.Louisa Harland, Frank Dillane and Adrian Lester are strong leads
