Hospital dramas are a hit on Netflix, Elite is a hit on Netflix: so what do you get when you put both concepts together? A monster success on Netflix! That is exactly what the streaming service hopes for with Respira (English title: Breathless), the new Spanish series that also has a premiere date.
The makers of the Spanish hit series Elite are working on a new series, Respira, which will be a hospital drama in the spirit of, for example, Grey's Anatomy and New Amsterdam (2018). The Joaquín Sorolla Hospital in Valencia is central. Every day, the employees of that hospital commit themselves 100 percent to providing care to all patients at a hectic pace. And if one of those patients turns out to be very prominent, the chaos is of course complete. Suddenly a major strike is called, but a strike and a hospital, that is of course a terrible combination!
Elite was (and is) of course a resounding success, but creator Carlos Montero thought it was time for a change a while ago. He focused on making series for a more mature audience. Feria: La luz más oscura and El desorden que dejas for example. And now Respira. “I'm now 51 and I'm pushing myself to make other types of series. I have always loved hospital dramas and I feel like this is the right time to work on such a production myself,” said the Spaniard.
“Our directors have done their utmost to give the series a modern atmosphere. I think that the Spanish hospital series in general could use some improvement,” Montero continues. “Although there are some good ones, a Spanish series has never had the budget to compete with American series…”
