Sherwood (2022) - Season 1

Sherwood (2022) knows how to distinguish itself from other detective series with an interesting historical link, a lot of psychological drama and an exciting manhunt

Sherwood Forest is where the legend of Robin Hood was born. This place is also the setting of the contemporary detective series Sherwood (2022). Perhaps the clearest connection to Robin Hood is the weapon used to commit a gruesome murder: bow and arrow. In a small mining town near Nottingham, someone shoots and kills an old man with this medieval weapon. Detective Ian St. Clair (David Morrissey, The Walking Dead) is put on the case and discovers that this murder may have been connected to the miners' strikes of the 1980s. When another murder is committed later, there seems to be a connection to the earlier case.

British television channels know very well how to make a solid detective series. Nowadays it is therefore more of an art to make a detective series that clearly distinguishes itself from other series in the genre. Death In Paradise, for example, is set on a tropical island, Vigil on a submarine and Father Brown (2013) has the detective in question as a priest. The distinguishing elements of Sherwood (2022) are the obvious references to Robin Hood and the miners' strikes.

This series has interesting references to the legend of Robin Hood

This link to Robin Hood is not only in the bow and arrow. The differences between rich and poor and the willingness to fight poverty also come to the fore. The miners' strikes drew a line in society. Some of the workers formed a union and went on strike, while some continued to work. It led to tensions in society and those subcutaneous irritations were regularly expressed in violent actions. It also shows what deep marks these old divisions left in society and how they are reflected once the delicate balance in such a small society is upset. This disturbed balance is portrayed in an extremely strong way.

The performance of the ensemble of actors, led by David Morrissey, helps very well in this. He too has played a role in the past in enforcing the protests and that is clearly still bothering him. When this murder is committed, everything comes back clear. We also see strong roles from actors such as Lesley Manville (Magpie Murders), Robert Glenister (Spooks), Adeel Akhtar (Utopia) and Adam Hugill (The Watch (2021)).

The murder case in question is solved in a special way

What also makes this case special is the solving of the murder case. For both the viewer and the St. Clair team, the identity of the perpetrator soon seems clear. What is not yet known is the motive. Why specifically did this person commit this murder? St. Clair and his colleagues also have to find the perpetrator, because he has more people on his death list. With this manhunt, the typical detective suddenly gets a lot of extra excitement.

Sherwood (2022) has enough material to stand out from most other detective novels. It is exciting, well-acted and has interesting connections to recent and less recent history. If you are still looking for a good British detective, then this is definitely recommended.
