An original adaptation of Clavell's bestseller, Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the beginning of a centuries-long civil war.
Producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada (Helix) stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who fights for his life as his enemies in the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found in a nearby fishing village, the English pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), comes up with secrets that could help Toranaga tilt the balance of power and reveal the formidable influence of Blackthorne's own enemies - the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants - to destroy. Their fate is inextricably linked to that of their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced family.
The 10-part series, based on the novel by James Clavell, will premiere worldwide on February 27, 2024 on Hulu in the US, Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other countries. The premiere includes the first two episodes, followed by a new episode every week.
FX's linear channel will release new episodes every week.
Although an American production, Shōgun features a Japanese cast including Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Shinnosuke Abe, Yuki Kura, Yuka Kouri and Fumi Nikaido.
Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks are the creators, Marks is showrunner and executive producer alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca and Kondo. The series is produced by FX Productions.
