In the story, Margaret Wright (Harden) is a razor-sharp and successful lawyer torn apart by the recent dissolution of her marriage. Her son Todd (Astin) is a quick-thinking former private investigator who's run into trouble after his "flexible interpretation of the law" revoked his license. Although Margaret's high standards and strict adherence to the law conflict with Todd's scrappy and down-trodden methods, she asks him to join her firm as a private investigator.
The partnership between mother and son is a great first step towards mending their fragile and dysfunctional relationship. Maybe they even understand each other better at this crucial point in their lives.
