Trailer for the final season Somebody Somewhere struggles with change

The critically acclaimed HBO series begins its final season this month.
HBO's description for the third and final season of Somebody Somewhere is brief: "In season three, we see growth against all odds." A trailer for the series suggests the source of some of those big odds.

In the trailer (viewable below this news item), Sam (Bridget Everett) is confronted with some changes in her life as Joel (Jeff Hiller), with whom she lives, gets an offer on his house and prepares to move, while she continues to try to figure out what she wants with her life: “I don't really know what I'm doing,” Sam says at one point in the trailer, followed by a plaintive question: “What's wrong with wanting a little more? "

There are, of course, a number of jokes in the trailer - Somebody Somewhere is a comedy series, even if it's not a setup punchline factory - along with the series' signature open-hearted warmth for its characters. The trailer's musical track, Ooh La La by The Faces, helps emphasize this last point.

HBO announced in August that it would end the critically acclaimed Somebody Somewhere with season three. Everett, who is also a writer and executive producer on the series, said earlier this year that she received praise from people in Manhattan, Kansas — her hometown and the show's setting — for carefully portraying small-town life.

“At different points somebody who runs queer studies at Kansas State and the head basketball coach came over to tell me they liked the show,” Everett said. “I found it very satisfying that people from such different walks of life could see themselves in the show and respond well to it. You don’t want your hometown to turn on you and think you’re a big turkey.”

Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen created Somebody Somewhere. They co-produce with Everett, Carolyn Strauss (via her Mighty Mint banner); Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn of Duplass Brothers Productions; and Tyler Romary. Shuli Harel produces. The writers of season three are Bos and Thureen, Everett, Lisa Kron and Lennon Parham; Jay Duplass, Robert Cohen and Parham directed.
