Suburræterna - Season 1
Suburra's successor does not have the same spark.
After the murder of his family, Alberto 'Spadino' Anacleti feels forced to return to Rome. Although he has recently managed to keep out of his family's mafia practices, he is soon drawn back into the world. It is time for revenge. Spadino thinks he has found a good partner in the corrupt politician Cinaglia. Unfortunately, the opposition appears to be stronger and closer than expected.
For Angelica (Spadino's ex-wife), the mass murder of the Anacleti family is a liberation. After her traumatic marriage to Spadino, she remained in the grip of the family. However, her status was nothing more than a dust-up. At most, she was tolerated because of her former relationship with Spadino. Her new relationship with Damiano Luciano puts her at the center of a violent power struggle again. This power struggle is not only waged for power in the criminal circuit, but also has political and religious components.
The base of Suburræterna is not bad at all. The television series is a logical sequel to Suburra. The images are, as is so often the case with an Italian series, excellently presented and tailored to the violent story. It is depicted clearly and directly. The surroundings of Rome help create a suitable atmosphere. This time no romantic image of this metropolis, but attention to the dark fringes. The fact that this sometimes includes fantastic buildings provides extra cachet. The acting is generally also very good.
However, the television series does not quite meet expectations. The story is well put together but also quite cliché. Power is taken over by an opponent and the other has to get it back. This mainly involves a lot of setbacks. The opponent is always a little smarter than expected or unexpected alliances are suddenly made so that the person who has to be killed still manages to escape.
However, the biggest negative of this season is the dramatic state of shooting the opponent. Rarely have I seen so many misses at such a small distance. The fact that the protagonists almost always manage to escape does not make the story any more believable.
The conclusion is that Suburræterna is a solid sequel to Suburra. Nothing more and nothing less. Definitely worth it for fans of the genre, but don't expect a top series.
