Succession - Season 3 (DVD)

Unfortunately, an excellent third season of HBO Max's award-winning success series Succession will not receive a DVD release to match.

The third season of Succession again offers beautiful fireworks. The series is about the Roy family who run the large media and entertainment company Waystar RoyCo. The series is loosely based on the Murdoch family, where 92-year-old Rupert Murdoch recently indicated that he wants to slow down and take a step back from his empire, which includes Fox television, The Sun, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post . In Succession, it is Logan Roy (Brian Cox, Deadwood) who, as the father of three sons (Kendall, Connor and Roman) and a daughter (Shiv), realizes that he will eventually have to hand over his empire to one of them.

In the second season we saw Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong, Masters of Sex) figuratively throw his father under the bus at a live press conference. This third season starts with picking up the pieces and determining the strategy as quickly as possible. The question is which side Logan Roy's other children will choose in this almost hopeless situation. Eldest son Connor Roy (Alan Ruck, Spin City) and youngest son Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin, Solar Opposites) and daughter Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook, Spirited), will, as usual, draw on their sense of endless power, using the necessary dirty strategies that make the choice that will benefit them the most.

There are again the necessary plot twists, wonderfully sharp cynical dialogues and great guest roles.

There are again the necessary plot twists, wonderfully sharp, cynical dialogues and great guest roles. This season only has nine episodes, but they are all strong episodes. After two seasons, there is still plenty of fodder for trickery, deceit, abuse of power and shameless wealth. There are also great guest roles. Of course, there is Shiv's fallen husband, Bob Wambsgans (Matthew Macfayden, Ripper Street), but also Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) as Lukas Matsson, boss of the streaming platform GoJo that preys on Waystar RoyCo, and David Rasche (Sledge Hammer!) as lawyer Karl Muller. Of course there is a suitably exciting ending that will lead to the fourth (and final) season of this strong series.

The Dutch DVD has an English and a French soundtrack and subtitles in Dutch, French and English for the hearing impaired. The extras are fairly limited. These are not bad in themselves, but they can also be found on HBO Max. First, there is a two-minute discussion by the actors and writers over footage from the second and fourth episodes of this season entitled “Succession: Controlling the Narrative.” There is also a short “Who said it?” in which Sarah Snook, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun and Matthew Macfayden guess who belongs to which quotes. Finally, there is the short film “Roy Family Food Chain”, with actors making jokes about their characters. The episodes all have good image quality, also because each disc contains three episodes. A great season, but unfortunately no extras to match this edition.
