Succession - Season 4 (DVD)

The fourth and final season of Succession is a worthy conclusion to HBO Max's hit series.

The fourth and final season of Succession is a worthy conclusion to HBO Max's hit series. Logan Roy (Brian Cox, Deadwood), the owner of the major entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, is finally retiring and it seems that the family business will be sold to Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård, True Blood), the big boss of an important streaming platform. That vision of the future is of course a nightmare for the four descendants of Logan Roy.

With the introduction of Lukas Mattson in the previous season, a great character has been added to the series

With the introduction of Lukas Mattson in the previous season, a nice character has been added to the series, this season Mattson is a regular character in most intrigues. The question is how Logan Roy's daughter and three sons will respond. Will they work together somehow, or will they remain diametrically opposed to each other? Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong, Masters of Sex) has of course placed himself outside the family with his actions, but the common enemy may offer him perspective. Meanwhile, eldest son Connor Roy (Alan Ruck, Spin City), youngest son Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin, Igby Goes Down) and daughter Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook, Spirited) work together, but they also have their own interests.

The Roy children also have a lot to deal with on a personal level, Shiv Roy's marriage to Bob Wambsgans (Matthew Macfayden, Ripper Street) has ended in trouble, while Connor is finally getting married to Willa Ferreyra (Justine Lupe, Mr. Mercedes). When Logan Roy's health deteriorates, all developments accelerate and the conclusion of this series only becomes more fascinating.

The Emmy-winning series Succession remains strong and the scripts for the last ten episodes are all strong. We have become accustomed to power games, dirty strategies and wonderfully sharp cynical dialogues, but the writers have once again come up with surprising scenarios for the ultimate season. The acting is strong again and in addition to the seasoned actors, lesser-known actors are also given the opportunity to show themselves. British writer and producer Jesse Armstrong (Fresh Meat) ends his American television success beautifully.

Fortunately, the extras are slightly more extensive than in the third season.

With the Dutch edition, the three DVD discs are released in a transparent Amaray box in a beautifully designed cardboard sleeve. The edition has an English and a French soundtrack and subtitles in Dutch, French and English for the hearing impaired. Fortunately, the extras are slightly more extensive than in the third season. Then there was a short discussion by the actors and writers on two episodes under the title “Controlling the Narrative”, now these are recorded for all episodes.

There is also a short “Who said it?” in which this time Logan & Gerri and Tom & Greg guess who belongs to which quotes. Finally, there are two short films “Scene Swap: Tom & Greg” and one of a recap of the characters of the series. The ten episodes all have good image quality. A nice closing season, where as a fan of the series you also have the choice of purchasing this fourth season on DVD or opting for the box set with all four seasons together, which was also released in the Netherlands.
