Supacell - Season 1

Always wanted to have a superpower? And which one? In Supacell, a number of people in South London suddenly gain superpowers. However, not everyone uses it as selflessly.

The superhero genre, a genre that has been rather crowded in recent years (to say the least). One series after another is released about the battle between good and evil in a world where there are people with supernatural powers. And every time I sit down to see if there is just that one thing that sets a series apart from what is already there and that makes me want to see the next episode again and again.

In Supacell, a series created by British rapper Rapman, we see a number of residents from South London. At first glance, Michael (Tosin Cole, Doctor Who), Andre (Eric Kofi Abrefa, BMF), Rodney (Calvin Demba, The Rig), Sabrina (Nadine Mills) and Tazer (Josh Tedeku, Boarders) have little in common beyond the fact that they live in South London.

However, that changes when they suddenly discover that they have supernatural powers. And believe it or not, the first thought of many of them is not to use those powers to create a better world. Most of them have their own problems and see their powers as an opportunity to progress themselves.

The problems addressed in the series, problems such as social inequality, poverty and racism, offer a depth to the series that we have not often encountered in the superhero genre.

Andre is in financial trouble, so he doesn't get to see his son often. When it turns out that he is suddenly super strong, this quickly leads to planning a robbery. And Tazer sees in his invisibility the ideal opportunity to deal with a hostile gang and seize power on the streets.

Everything is a bit different with Michael. Because he does not yet have control over his powers, he ends up in the future and sees some things that he does not like. The only way to prevent that future from becoming a reality is to find Andre, Rodney, Dionne and Tazer and team up against an unknown enemy. But is that so easy if you don't know those people and everyone is mainly concerned with themselves...

At first glance, Supacell is a superhero series like so many others. Chances are that when you read what I wrote above, Heroes immediately came to mind. And that comparison is quickly made since here too there are 'normal' people who suddenly turn out to have a superpower.

However, Supacell is without a doubt more real and raw than Heroes was. We see the struggle of a group of individuals to live in South London, often in less than ideal circumstances. And we see how they deal with the enormous change they undergo. The fear of what is going on with them, but also seeing the possibilities that their powers provide and which suddenly makes them see a way out of their problems.

The issues addressed in the series, such as social inequality, poverty and racism, offer a depth to the series that we have not often encountered in the superhero genre. The story is well put together (although I hope that it will be a little more unpredictable for any subsequent seasons) and the acting and the choice of background music are excellent.
