Police drama series S.W.A.T. (2017) canceled by CBS

Hondo and his team will no longer protect the public in the 2023-24 television season.

CBS has canceled S.W.A.T. (2017) so there won't be a seventh season. The sixth season is currently airing on Friday nights.

S.W.A.T. (2017) is a police drama series starring Shemar Moore, Alex Russell, Jay Harrington, Kenny Johnson, David Lim and Patrick St. Esprit. The crime thriller centers on Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson (Moore), a Los Angeles resident and former Marine who is put in charge of a new Special Weapons And Tactics unit (S.W.A.T.).

The rest of the team consists of the seasoned David 'Deacon' Kay (Harrington), the cocky Jim Street (Russell), the expert driver Dominique Luca (Johnson) and the informant Victor Tan (Lim). Commander Robert Hicks (St. Esprit), a senior LAPD officer in the Special Operations Bureau, is responsible for directing all S.W.A.T. units of the Metro Division.

S.W.A.T. (2017)

The sixth season of S.W.A.T. (2017) averages a 0.42 in the 18-49 demographic and 5.07 million viewers in the live + same day ratings (including all DVR playback up to 3:00 AM). Compared to season five, that's 6% less in the demo and 18% more viewers. In the live + 7 day ratings, the drama gets almost 30% more viewers.

Despite the increase in ratings, CBS still chose to cancel the series. Sony Television, which produces S.W.A.T. (2017), and the network could not agree on a license fee. According to Deadline, Sony had not increased the license fee in recent years, even as costs had risen and the studio's profits had fallen.

CBS management let the series' exclusivity expire and was eventually willing to increase the licensing fee, but dropped the episode order. That would have made the cost per episode even higher for Sony, and ultimately no deal could be reached.

Given the budget of S.W.A.T. (2017) it is highly unlikely that a new home will be found.

“For six seasons, the amazing talents of the S.W.A.T. (2017) cast led by Shemar Moore, the writers, producers and crew guided by Executive Producers Shawn Ryan, Andy Dettman and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas brought us compelling, action packed episodes that also addressed important social issues and contributed to the success of our primetime line up,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “We sincerely thank them for their incredible work and passion and also thank our dedicated fans who tuned in every week.”

There are two more episodes coming. The series finale, titled 'Legacy', will be released on Friday, May 19.
