While many had been anticipating Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi season two among Star Wars' upcoming series, Tales of the Empire was shockingly announced instead. While Tales of the Jedi focused on two Jedi, Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku, the Tales of the Empire trailer revealed a focus on Barriss Offee and Morgan Elsbeth. Now, a new exclusive clip sheds light on what Morgan's story will entail.

The clip from Tales of the Empire shows how the Nightsisters of Dathomir desperately try to defend themselves against General Grievous' attack. Although the slaughter of the Nightsisters was already featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it appears that Tales of the Empire will explore the perspectives of the Nightsisters in more detail.

Since the Tales of the Empire trailer revealed that Morgan Elsbeth is a major character, the murder of the Nightsisters will undoubtedly provide crucial context; as Nightsister herself, this moment was undoubtedly life-changing and devastating for Morgan.

Although Star Wars, and Palpatine in particular, has introduced some truly disturbing acts of violence - from Order 66 to the destruction of Alderaan with the Death Star - the slaughter of the Nightsisters of Dathomir ranks high on the list of the most horrific Star Wars atrocities . As depicted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and as will undoubtedly be depicted in Tales of the Empire, this attack by General Grievous was a full-blown purge, carried out at Palpatine's behest. Tragically, this massacre was almost entirely successful; few Nightsisters survived this event.

It makes sense why Palpatine would commit such a heinous act. As the Force-sensitive witches of Star Wars, the Nightsisters had incredible and unique power at a time when Palpatine was most actively trying to rise to the top. They weren't Jedi or Sith and that made them a threat to Palpatine. Furthermore, Asajj Ventress, also a Nightsister, had become hostile to Palpatine's then-apprentice, Count Dooku, which Palpatine undoubtedly saw as a potential weakness in his plan for the Galactic takeover.

Like the Jedi, the Nightsisters therefore suffered a genocide as a result of Palpatine's bloodthirsty quest for power and control. While updates to Tales of the Empire have not yet been completed, it is clear that these backstories will play an important role for Morgan Elsbeth, whose life has been forever shaped by this tragedy.

While the full extent of General Grievous' role in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire remains to be seen, it is clear that the lightsaber-wielding Separatist will make his Star Wars return to carry out this terrible slaughter of the Nightsisters.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire can be streamed on Disney+ from Saturday, May 4.
